Guest flumax
I hold judgement against Andy Murray. One of the finest Scottish sports man ever, yet I was annoyed he only came out for Scottish independence on the eve of the vote. If there is a second ref, l hope he gets behind it earlier as I think he'll be a huge asset. If however he chickens out for PR reasons again then I think he deserves full flack. Do any of you resent tom devine, shaun connery, Brian souter (and I'm sure others) for being knights of the realm and supporters of an independent Scotland? Aye, personally I resent anyone (in the public eye) from taking any type of "award" from the establishment. The whole background to it, the stomach churning guff that goes along with the ceremonial granting of it, the, let's just say......'dubious' list of former recipients. The whole thing just stinks to the high heavens of pomp & outdated thoughts of hierarchy and entitlement.

I don't have a problem with monarchist separatists, or republican unionists. But I think if you made your living out of being anti-establishment then took the honours, that would be in danger of seeming hypocritical, unless you were taking the piss (Sir Francis Boyle?). There are other odder permutations that are difficult to fathom - 'socialist Lords', or, say, 'Irish nationalist unionists'. Murray has a particular problem, he's inevitably going to be given union flags and saltires to wave and for others to try to make political capital out of it - as someone said, he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Also living in London and everything, he is going to be a bit 'Anglo-Scottish' and hardly anti-Brit even if pro-Scot. I'm not that bothered, but it's in your face at this time of year. I recently met an Irish nationalist monarchist. Only way he thought there would be a united Ireland was giving the orange order a monarch. A tactical monarchist then - and no doubt there are some Scottish nationalist republican tactical monarchists.

Yup. I'd class myself in this class. Would rather a republic, but for now an independent Scotland with HRH as Head of state will do me. Pool Q
I couldn't care less what his politics are, he is a tennis player. I think the trend towards giving sports people honours earlier in their lives/careers is a mistake, but if anyone in sport deserves an honour it is Murray. I'd do away with the monarchy, and were I offered an Honour (never going to happen) I think I'd decline it, but don't see any issues in a sportsman like Murray accepting one if he so chooses.
