Jimmy Superfly Snuka

Recommended Posts

Love to have seen him in his prime before the Nancy Argentino incident (by most accounts, if he had been fit enough to stand retrial, which it was looking like could very much happen had his health not deteriorated, he probably would have went down for that) he was ahead of his time, and if he had not been such a coke head and able to cut a promo, probably would have got the ball to run for WWE which Hogan ended up getting.

As a kid my cousin was into wrestling and would get all the wrestling magazines, and remember him telling me that Snuka was this mythical legend who was a must watch, yet when I finally did see him in the early 90's, he just looked old and broken and that life had completely owned him.

What is it that that actually means?

In the early 1980's he had the rugged chiseled looks of a Greek God that was popular in WWE for the faces (good guys), but between leaving in 1985 and returning at the start of 1989, though still in his early 40's, he had seemed to age at least 10 years, and looked closer to his late 60's.

This was back in the days when there was still a bit of mystery about WWF/WWE with nowhere near the exposure we get these days of wall-to-wall coverage, with only 4 big main events every 4/5 months to watch it, and from 1990 onward Snuka just seemed to age at an alarming rate (in 1991 during his final year with the company when he was basically putting over the guys who would become WWF main/top guys in the 90's, he looked about 70 then).

Even when he made a few legend appearances about 8/9 years ago, though actually not bad looking for his age, he looked closer to 80 than his actual age of mid/late 60's.

The legend of Snuka is helped somewhat by guys like Mick Foley who were in attendance at the match he had where he did a splash from the top of the cage above (Foley is even seen in the crowd at one point sitting in the front row) who push that match to the hill as what got them into wrestling, but probably the only readily available stuff to watch him is his 90's stuff, and you will be hard pushed to picture the broken old man on display there as one of the innovators of wrestling entertainment.

No. I mean what does that one line actually mean?

Basically years of drug and steroid abuse took its toll on him physically very fast (guys like Hogan and Piper did the same, yet hardly look(ed) much older now than they did in their prime.... while guys like Snuka and Superstar Billy Graham seemed to go from their prime to shriveled old men almost over night).
