aaid
In 1994 we played Holland in Utrecht on a Friday night which was a World Cup warmup game for us. The same weekend there was a Rugby Sevens tournament on in Amsterdam and Scotland had a team in it. We bumped into a very refreshed big Doddie at about 2am on Sunday morning in the Leidesplien. Lovely big guy and he suggested we go along to watch them play the next - or more accurate it same - day. By the time we got there around lunchtime, they'd already be knocked out, which if the rest of the team were in the same state as Doddie was no surprise. Pool Q
Sad news for a lovely (if daft) big bloke. Met him a few times, as a friend was in the same Melrose team as him, Chalmers, Redpath and co. Was actually thinking about him the other day as he was in a Q&A at a breakfast thing at Murrayfield the last time the Lions were in New Zealand, along with Jim Telfer and Alan Tait. After the 1st Test walloping Telfer and Tait were asked questions about Woodward, and (both having a fairly recent Lions connection) were evasive and scrupulously avoided being openly critical. Big Doddie (in trademark tartan suit) took the mike and said 'Well, I'll say what everyone is thinking. Woodward is a bawbag!' It brought the house down.
