Why Do We Always Throw It Away?

Does this theory not fall down when you consider that some of our team/squad are english? Why would the likes of Martin and Morrison play poorly because of an ingrained mentality that Scottish people have?

At the end of the day we are just not very good. We can run big teams close through shear effort and determination, but in technical terms the Georgian players looked more accomplished on the ball than we are.

We've got youth coaches up and down the country telling kids to 'play it long' or 'get stuck in' and we've got an under 21 manager who wants to pick tall players over more gifted ones. We are stuck in the dark ages.

Look at England. If this theory was right they should have a great natural mentality. And yet despite their resources and population size they were straight out the world cup in the first round without a win to their name. Why?

A yes vote wouldnt change our coaching methods and wouldnt stop our best young players continue to want to throw their careers away at the old firm instead of really testing themselves.

I strongly disagree with a lot of this post, Georgia beat us through penetration not being technically ''comfortable'' on the ball, we kept possession no problem but hit a brick wall in the final 3rd and were scared to shoot.

In the youth argument the ''long ball''mentality is being bred out of the game, I work in youth football and of course there are isolated exceptions, but overall theres a willingness to develop players technically.

Im also sick of people blaming coaches for our technical regression, coaching has improved dramatically over the last 30 years, kids are just playing less football, instead of playing street football they are sitting in the house playing the xbox.

Our coaches need to re-create the past environment by giving the kids the touches of a football they are missing out on before even beginning to develop game awareness.

Every developed nation has had this problem, we just took longer to deal with it.

Been said on here a few times by other people but we just don't have the 1 or 2 top class players with the ability to break down a defensive minded team (even an average team).

When the onus is on us to take the game to a team we really struggle and have done so for years, Norway at home (the one when Faddy was sent off), Belguim at home (2-2), Italy at home (2007), Georgia away (2007), England at home (1999), Czech Republic at home (2-2), Lithunia away (last campaign) all examples off the top of my head.

Ukraine at home is the only match I remember when we properly played a team off the park and it wasn't heart in the mouth stuff.

Nostalgia clouds the judgement - we clearly werent as good as we like to think we were

We never qualified for a world cup in the 60s and never made it past the knock out rounds in 74 or 78 when it was never easier

Agree with most of the rest of your post however you could argue that partially the reasons for all your examples is a lack of national self confidence

Back in the 60s the WC finals comprised 16 teams. 4 diddy teams 3 or 4 from the Americas and 8 or 9 from Europe. So you had to be one of the top 8 or 9 in Europe or knock one or them out to qualify. In 62 we got knocked out by Czechoslovakia (only after a playoff). They went on to be runners up in Chile. 66 Italy knocked us out and 70 West Germany knocked us out. We were far, far better back in the 60s but just not quite good enough to knock out top class opposition.

I would also add the international football was totally different back then - there are a lot more well drilled teams these days than previous. The 80's and 90's are the decades where we stood still and many other nations stretched miles ahead.

I agree with the OP on pretty much every point. I think we have a subconscious fatalism that leads us into self fulfilling prophecies of failure. It's a lack of innate belief but we're far from alone in that. Look at Wales football history for example, even the Dutch when it comes to World Cup Finals. The only nations that seem to have always had it are the Germans, Italians and Brazil. ####ed if I can think why that is.
