norsefox
The only result that can deny us 3rd place is dropping points to Gibraltar or Ireland beating Germany. Every other worst-case scenario (us losing tonight and Ireland winning tonight) has no effect on our final position. Plug the scores into here: http://ultra.zone/UEFA-EURO-2016-qualifying#group=d Essentially the game v Poland is our biggest game since we played Italy in 2007. Any result we get tonight or if Ireland drop points makes the Ireland - Germany result irrelevant and puts it back entirely into our hands. I think that if Germany beat Ireland then Poland have qualified and assuming we beat Poland then Germany win the group. Therefore Poland's final game has no real meaning for them except pride which leaves the door wide open for Ireland Edited September 7, 2015 by smiler82
smiler82
To add to that - all this is assuming we beat Poland which I just can't see happening at the moment...

scottishedgar
Germany will win in Dublin. They were superb tonight. If that happens then we have to better Ireland 's result v Poland for 3rd
Wolfgang Overthebar
As long as Ireland dont beat Germany We will be guaranteed a play-off if we win our last two games - A tough ask if we draw with Poland and beat Gibraltar, we need Ireland to lose both their remaining games. And if Poland pick up a point against us they will only need a point against Ireland. There is little doubt i'd rather be in Ireland's position tonight but its not all over
blackcountry jock
It's very simple we must beat Poland and Germany must beat Ireland then we will get 3rd spot ( assuming we beat gib) won't matter how it ends up Poland v Ireland one of them will finish 2nd the other 4th
Clyde1998
We must get four more points than Ireland to get into the play-offs, either by: Ireland losing both games, and us drawing with Poland and beating Gibraltar (or vice versa) Ireland failing to win either game, and us beating both Poland and Gibraltar. Toepoke
We must get four more points than Ireland to get into the play-offs, Or 6 more points than Poland...
Clyde1998
Or 6 more points than Poland... Yeah, but that's not going to happen. Also, we can't finish above both Ireland and Poland any more.

Anders
If Ireland don't beat Germany And we beat Poland ( yes I know it's a big if !!!) Three points against Gib and we have a play - off Doom and gloomers can be as grumpy as they want but that is fact Try the predictor thingy it's fun ... jock strap
If we play them with a tad more aggression like we did tonight, we will beat them.
Toepoke
Yeah, but that's not going to happen. Also, we can't finish above both Ireland and Poland any more. No we needed a point tonight to have a chance of 2nd. Not sure about Poland not taking zero points though. If we can beat them (and Ireland don't beat Germany) it sets up a do or die game in Warsaw...
Ally Bongo
On reflection we will not beat Poland and here is why; Poland are; 1 an excellent team on the break and 2 an excellent team at taking the game to the opposition (remember the last 20 minutes over there and how they horsed Georgia home and away) We need to win badly and the Poles realise this. A draw will suit them fine We are rotten at taking the game to the opposition and are back to our old traits of struggling to score from open play Poland will play tight and try to hit us on the break knowing that even if they concede they will most likely be able to get at least one back Might as well accept it now We would need a massive amount of luck to beat them which is something we never get Added to that other results will probably not go our way either Edited September 7, 2015 by Ally Bongo
