Toepoke
Bloody hell! That's a shame, always enjoyed reading the two Ians on a Sunday evening

neilser
That's very sad - I used to go out of my way to read his columns every week. He wrote well about his pal McIlvanney, just 4 days ago: http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/14127748.Ian_Bell__William_McIlvanney_wrote_us__and_every_word_he_committed_to_the_page_will_stand/?ref=mr&lp=

scotlad
Just seen the news on Twitter (I have been in Englandshire) all week. I am genuinely gutted. Bell was an excellent journalist and he seemed like a decent man too. He will be sorely missed. RIP Ian.
exile
"His column was like a refuge, a regular bout of sanity, clarity and righteous anger." http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2015/12/11/remembering-ian-bell/
rabmania
He wrote the best review I've ever read of a Dylan gig- at the SECC. Despite the venue's horrid acoustics, and Bob's, ahem, idiosyncrasies, it was magical, and Ian's review nailed it. He was never less than interesting, and mostly rivetting, thoughtful and insightful. A good man gone.

Heuch Moray
Excellent journalist, one of the best. Recently read for the second time his insightful biography on R.L Stevenson Dreams of Exile - A man who also died too early in life.
Padre Andrew
59? No age at all these days. Haven't seen an explanation yet. Will really miss his writing in the Saturday and Sunday Herald. RIP big fella.

brant grebner
What Bob Crampsey was to Scottish football, Ian Bell was to political discourse, morality and Scottish culture. A ing bastion. However hungover, strung out and full of bile and shite, Ian Bell wis someone I would readily read who would rationalise the situation and pull it away from the knee jerk right-wing agenda and explore the greater picture. A brilliant writer, a guid mind and one who will be sorely missed. Too soon. RIP.

Return of Yermaw
Early days. Today's Guardian obituary mentions he died at home shortly after becoming ill. http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/dec/12/ian-bell-obituary Was he battling a long term illness and had a relapse I wonder? It was quite a shock to learn of his death given his age and how prolific he was - a column appearing in the Herald just before his death.
