Anyone had any recurring problems with their Achilles before?

After the Glasgow half marathon last month I had my usual aches and pains, nothing major but then after getting home and resting for an hour or so I got up to answer the phone and there was a horrible popping/crunching noise in my Achilles and a flash of pain through my ankle when I put my foot down.

For the next few days every morning it was really painful and was hard to walk on, but it would eventually wear off during the day. But after any days that I'm on my feet more than usual (Lithuania game for example), but even as recently as this weekend I still get the quite bad pain the next morning for a few hours until it wears off.

Its not bad enough to go to the doctor, but anyone had these sort of symptoms before? I've been taking it easy since the run but pretty eager to get back out, but then I don't want to be unknowingly doing more damage to myself in the long run (no pun intended).

I've also been unable to run since the Glasgow half.

Just go see a physio that specialises in running, it'll be the best £20 you ever spend. I've learnt the all my injuries are caused by one hamstring being longer than the other, there's just no way you could find that out from the internet.

Go see a specialist.

I have problems with my achilles that actually go more aggravated when I was on holiday in Malta and Slovakia with all the walking I did. Hill  running also aggravates it.

Does this sound like the issue?

Mine is caused by my hips dropping in and resulting pronation. I went to the physio and got some exercises. It isn't bothering me at all right now but at its height I would get waves of pain even when I was sitting down not moving.

Just ran the San Sebastián marathon yesterday. Great course for first timers and for those wanting a PB.  This was my first marathon and managed to get round in 4hrs 14 which I was pleased with.  Came down with the cold from Wednesday so was worried about running it as felt crap in the build up to yesterday but adrenaline kicked in.  First 35km felt really good but last 7km was a struggle but assume that's normal!  The course was 2 laps of the city and was glad that I did not get lapped by the Kenyan who won the marathon. He was entering the stadium to win the marathon when I was starting my 2nd lap!

would love to aim for under 4 hrs but going to try to lose a couple of stone next year and aim on getting quicker at half marathon distance before attempting a second!  Would definitely recommend this one.

Congrats on a great first marathon.

I think if you do another on similar training you would probably go under 4 just because you know what you are doing the time. But the best way to get faster is run more, which will also help you lose weight.  If you get your training and pacing right a marathon doesn't have to hurt in the last few miles.

Cheers Denny's Yard.  Had a horrible cold since finishing the run last Sunday and getting restless as wanting to get back out, eve. for a 10k run.

I will definitely run a marathon next year, probably around October, November but going to concentrate on the losing a couple of stone and running Jersey and Southampton half marathons in the first six months.  Running is good for losing weight but I have probably plateau over last few months do what to concentrate on diet. As you say, get the pace and training correct and aim will be to finish last 7km strongly!

Let's resurrect this thread and get you fat middle aged bastards fit.

I did barely anything during lockdown. Parkrun is my motivation to run and with it being off i couldn't find my running mojo.

Now Parkrun is back on I've started to get my arse in gear.

I was struggling to do a 5k in in under 30 minutes at the start, my pb is 22:52.

Delighted with a time of 27:40 at the weekend, need to start pushing it a bit more.

So where's all the TAMB runners?

I used to be in to running, regularly doing 2 or 3 10ks per week and ran a marathon too but nowadays I do next to nothing. I need to get back on it after some health issues

Like a lot of people I did next to nothing during lockdown.  I've also started a new job in the last 12 month and was doing ridiculous hours for a long spell so didn't have the time or motivation to do much.  A few weeks ago I started the Couch to 5K programme from the start again. My next run (tomorrow) will be Week 6/Day 2 which means I'm only 8 runs away from the full 5K.  Seems a bit fanciful at the moment but I'm sure I'll get there.

I lost 11 stone over last 2 years. Started training for the 10k a week on Sunday here a few months back, got down to 25 mins for the 5k and 51 for the 10k but fucked my knee a few weeks back now. Still recovering from a bad skin infection at the moment. So plan is now just to get round in under an hour without re-injuring my knee.

Started couch to 5k May 2020 and ran a slow 10k August 2020 but everything got shut down so stopped running and didn't pick it back up till start of July this year when i entered the 10k. I do a power of walking though, like 7 million steps in a year.

Mate I started couch25k last May and I can remember dreading having to run for 5mins without stopping, then a couple of months after finishing it i was out running for 90 mins straight. Just trust in the programme it really works.

That's outstanding mate. Don't rush the recuperation with the knee.

I've got a run called dramathon in 4 weeks it's a marathon but we enter as a relay. Obviously cancelled last year but did it the previous 3 years.

It's a cracking run through the whisky distilleries of Speyside.

I seriously need to up my training, only running 5ks just now

Yeah i've pushed all thoughts of running for a time out of my mind, going to do a slow 10k on the wednesday before it just to get some K's in the legs, then run it on the Sunday.

Knee holding up pretty well, but no point jumping back into a training session, if it feels great after the 10k will slowly build some miles up again. If it doesn't will just rest it up some more.

I got too involved and started doing 15 sets of 100 meter hill sprints with 45 second rest in between and then woke up middle of night in agony and it not bending. Forget wrong side of 40.

Started running 2 years ago as blood pressure was tipping into the hypertension 1 level. I am not overweight, don’t smoke and not particularly stressed , so exercise was the only thing I could think that would improve things as my job is extremely sedentary  ( cutting out my wine was NOT an option) .

I run 5k twice a week . It takes about 35- 40 mins but I just plod along, at almost 59 yrs I am just happy to have kept it up , and I do feel much better after doing it. I have no interest in increasing the distance or speed as I do feel exerted by what i do just now.
I started off going to the gym on the running machine , but when covid kicked in I had to run outside. Best thing that could have happened, much prefer being in the open air than stuck inside.

I would encourage anyone to give it a go. I just started building it up myself, but would probably recommend the couch to 5k thing as it really has been successful for a lot of people. Phart’s achievement is  phenomenal.

@Cove_Sheep Showed me the way on here, really started the thought processes going off in my mind, then I booked to go to Kenya to see my friend who was working over there and that provided the final catalyst.

That's actually not a bad pace. I feel that I have more in me that's the only reason I'm pushing it. Just being out doing it is good

Its good to push yourself when you feel you could step up a gear. I ran when i was in my 20’s , not in a running club , just like I am doing now, but I did challenge myself more and used a stop watch. I did the 10k Race for Life in 45 mins which was the only actual organised race i ever ran , and that was my best time. Its true that other runners help you lift your level.

These days I just glance at the clock on my cooker on my way out if I remember , and again when i get back home. I have a built in oven and a separate built in microwave that sit next to each other and have individual clocks. The times on them are about 3 mins apart.  I usually forget which clock I check on my way out  and so just pick the one with the best time when i get back 😁

I just cannot seem to pick up any extra speed. I literally cannot get a wider stride, I have no flexibility whatsoever in my hips. I look like I am running fast as my legs are moving quickly, but I am actually going absolutely nowhere 🙄

Phart I shall be using you as a poster boy for improving fitness and health   . My daughter gets married in 2 years and wants to lose weight. She does no exercise whatsoever so I have tried to encourage her to look at the couch to 5k system. If you are not an advert for its success I dont know who is. I just hope she has your focus and drive.

If you need any tips just ask me, but i really did super simple.

Counted calories going in and out and made sure there was a deficit (most of the time) I took most of my weight off by walking and changing eating habits, never did any particular diet or anything.

You can't out exercise a high calorie diet unless you'e cycling on the tour.

I went from 316lb down to about 207lb and only exercise I did was walking. Then started couch to 5k once i felt i wouldn't wreck my joints.

Man, I always pictured you as a wee skinny nerdy guy with NHS spex.

Your mental image of me is on the button though. 6ft 2.  Black hair, sallow skin great dancer.

Thanks 😊

You are absolutely right, exercise alone is not enough. My daughter likes pasta and bread and probably eats too much of it. I am not talking about wholewheat pasta with a drizzle of oil and cherry tomatoes, more 3 cheese macaroni and garlic bread with yet more cheese on it 😁
That will probably be the hardest thing to change, but if she can incorporate that with at least a bit of exercise to start with then build it up hopefully she will see results. She doesnt have a huge amount to lose but she isn’t happy with her current weight and a wedding day is special.

😂 , you should resurrect the ‘What do you imagine other TAMBERS to look like ‘ thread whilst you are taking a trip down memory lane.

There was a thread on here a few years ago, it was quite funny if I remember.

I dont think for one minute you meant offence to Phart.  I am reading a book just now, Starter for Ten, its pretty funny , its about a guy who goes to to Uni and gets on the University Challenge team. Most folk imagine intelligent people to look look like people from University Challenge circa 1985.

I was just laughing at your description of yourself .
That said, you might look like that how the hell would I know 😁
