A demolition job on Nishikori there! Djokovic is back to his annoying best and relatively fresh. Murray is knackered. Can't see anything other than a straight sets win for Djokovic tomorrow, unfortunately.

Nah, not having that. Djokovic played well, no doubt. His best? Not even close. He never had to get close to it. An utterly pathetic performance from Nishikori. Up there with when Andy lost 6-1, 6-0 to Federer in the WTF.

I hope you're right. When I said best, I was talking about the WTF as a whole. Four comprehensive wins against top eight opponents - the Dojokovic of the last few months would not have achieved that. He has his Mojo back.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure why the number one ranking is up for grabs.

I thought djokovic was defending the points he won here last year by winning it and Andy had already gained a good few points by making the final as he didn't get out of the group last year.

I know that the points gained are also determined by sets lost so maybe that's got something to do with it but it seems to me like djokovic can't gain any more points and Murray has already gained more.

It's a week later this year so last year's points have already dropped off.

I don't buy into the theory that this is Djokovic back to his best until we see him fully tested. However, Murray must be absolutely physically spent after two marathon matches already at the WTF. Unless Murray can win the first set and crank up the demons in Djoko's head then I only see one winner given Andy's physical condition.

oh dear some folk look right clowns on this thread.

Who?

All tennis pundits/experts felt Andy was going to toil physically to get the job done today but he put in a Herculean effort to get the job done and am delighted he has done it.

He now looks set for a good fair few weeks at No 1 now possibly up to next summer at least.

Fantastic. Winning that tournament, end of year number one, 25 wins on the spin,  nine tournament wins this year and he beat the world number 2, 3, 4 & 5 this week.

Superb achievement and absolutely deserved! An unbelievable show of willpower and stamina and for once, some lucky breaks with the unforced errors.

Delighted  to be proven wrong today and look forward to an extended period with Andy at #1.

I think everyone did purely on the fatigue front. I would have tipped him to win if he had come in as fresh as Novak. Andy played more than three hours more tennis than Novak at the WTF, had a tougher run og matches and a tougher schedule. Couple that with the fact that Murray has probably spent about a day's worth on court longer than Novak in the last month or so and everything looked to have fallen good for the Serb.

Think this cements Murray as Scotlands greatest ever sportsman.  Can't think of anyone who comes close to his achievements.

Off the top of my head the ones that come closest are Jackie Stewart, Sir Chris Hoy and perhaps boxer Ken Buchanan. I know Stephen Hendry dominated snooker in the 90s but it isn't really a global sport.

Couldn't agree more.

Without doubt the greatest Scottish sportsman of all time and ever will be in all likelihood. An incredible year - Davis Cup end of last season (THE WORLD CUP), then Wimbledon again, then the Olympics again in an almighty struggle in the heat of Rio, then umpteen tournaments, and now World Champion and World Number One. And all in what must be the most phyysically tough sport of all (excluding the nutty multi triathlon type things).

Any there any honours that Scotland can give Andy ??? He may well get a Knighthood from down south, but is there any honour just for Scotland?

Whatever he gets it will all be so well deserved. Brilliant stuff Andy and also a superb achievement for Jamie too to be World Number One too!!!! A big honour due for him too surely AND one please for Judy without whom neither of the Murray Brothers would have done anything. Judy is wonderful

Off the top of my head, I'd put Andy ahead of Hoy because Hoy's is a very narrow specialist part of cycling whereas tennis is, like, a whole sport!

Maybe Jackie S is up there, though only one part of motor sport, but he did win the main championship, what, three times?

I don't know enough about boxing. What about Jocky Wilson?
