Sunderland

Having only passed through on the Metro before , I thought Id take a wee drive down the coast from Newcastle and have a wee look round Sunderland. What a shytehole - the city centre is horrible - far inferior to any other cities Ive been in. No sign of Mr Fletcher packing his bags at the Stadium of Light

Anyone else visited and got a different opinion in case I missed anything?

Struggling to find how you drove down the coast from Newcastle bearing in mind Newcastke isn't on the coast

And aye, you have missed loads

As if 6 in a row isn't eating up these Geordie lovers

Not long till our annual 3 points at Sid James's.

I live in North Shields. Through the tunnel along the river at South Shields till the estuary then down the coast road. Simples. Ive only been in Newcastle just over a year  -couldnea give a shyte about either team Newcastle or Sunderland. On the plus side the rugby league magic weekend is here for the second year in a row.

been down there a few times for matches as I've a mate that is quite fond of them.  The centre is quite disappointing to say the least.  the past few times we've drunk in Newcastle and then trained it over to Sunderland.  pub nearest the ground is ok - think it's called the Colliery Inn or something like that.  first time I'd ever seen automated lager taps was in there.  they had to blow the cobwebs off the guiness tap when I asked for one and then had to pour it manually.
not sure if Magic City is still on the go or not but when I went to a match years ago with a football team I was playing with quite a few of the guys went there pre-match.  kind of a strip bar in an old theatre from the sounds of things but not really my thing.
last time I was there (v Crystal Palace last year) I witnessed what was probably the worst game of professional football I've ever seen.  there were only two highlights on match of the day.  Sunderland hitting the post and the CP keeper slipping when he went to kick the ball out.

You must've missed Seaburn and down Roker Beach which is nice also.

I am down there every 2nd week and love it to be honest, it took me a while to find places to go, I wouldn't say the centre is any better or worse than most places.

Proper working class place with a pint under £2 in loads of places, the locals are fantastic.

As a resident of Roker Marina this fella knows his onions!

Some class places in Sunderland, can only assume the OP drove with his eyes closed, Gin bars, bavaria beer houses, some decent restaurants, happy as larry if people want to big up Newcastle, craic on, keep the Wearside Riviera to the locals.

Hearing that Whitley Bay is now a ghost town?  Shame, spent many happy lads trips there.

I was in Newcastle a few months ago and that was what the locals reckoned.  Apparently Tynemouth is where it's at these days.  Out of curiosity though I took the Metro out to Whitley for a wee snoke around and it was indeed pretty dead (although British seaside towns tend not to be the most vibrant of places before Easter, even at the best of times).

The famous Spanish City was looking a bit down on its uppers but I managed to find The Fat Ox pub - as featured in The Likely Lads - which was a bit of a highlight for me. :)

It perhaps isn't as bleak a place as I painted it. There's still plenty of shops operating in the town centre (usually a good indicator of economic activity) and quite a few restaurants: there's loads of Indian restaurants and on the Promenade there's even a restaurant specialising in authentic Geordie cuisine, called something like Hinnys.

No, you've pretty much got it right. The local authority area which carries the name 'Sunderland' has city status but it also includes Washington, quite a large town in its own right, Houghton le Spring and Hetton le Hole. Sunderland itself is not much more than a town really and indeed those who live there always refer to it as 'the town'. Its suburbs are not actually too bad but what lets it down badly is the centre which is an absolute dump. It's actually improved quite a bit in the 23 years that I've been in the area so that gives some indication as to how bad it must have been before. Comparing Sunderland with Newcastle is like comparing apples with oranges; Newcastle is streets ahead and is the major city in north east England. Ten minutes spent in both cities would tell the visitor that straight away. A similar situation exists in neighbouring cties Leeds and Bradford, one flourishing the other dying.
