I hope they hang onto their best players, and indeed manager.

Bar Mahrez, Kante and probably Vardy I doubt there will be a load of teams turning up at their door waving wads of cash for the likes of Simpson, Huth, Drinkwater or Albrighton. If anyone does move on I imagine it might be Kante. It was mentioned in commentary last night, and has somehow been "leaked" out that he apparently has a pretty low release clause in his contract. Its doubtful the other two will have and it would probably need to be a lot of money to tempt Leicester to sell. I would hope that Mahrez and Kante stay and have a crack at the Champions League at least, they know they will get big money moves eventually if they keep up this seasons form.

Difficult to compare and contrast eras, but personally I think the Leicester win is a greater achievement than Forest's. Forest were playing in an era when teams without vast resources could win stuff and smaller clubs like Forest, Villa and Ipswich were capable of challenging for the league. And remember Forest bought the first £1m player, so certainly competing financially with the big boys.

I honestly think it's one of the greatest sporting stories of all time, and I don't think Carragher's piece was too ridiculous. The reason being that it was a sustained effort. Greece won the Euros, but only had to win about seven games. Buster Douglas beats Tyson and it's a single fight. England win the Ashes and it's a single series of games. Don't think any of these can compete against a 38 game season.

An incredible achievement. Really pleased for the fans.

I don't have any numbers but I would guess that, in spending terms, Forest would have been 2nd only to Man United at the time. One of Clough's biggest talents was the ability to persuade his chairmen to spend money that they didn't want to spend.

When he bought Trevor Francis, Clough tried desperately to buy him for £1 less than a million so that he couldn't be labelled the "First one million pound" player but he forgot about VAT, or some other tax, and that pushed him over the £1 million mark.

It's a great achievement, i think folk are suffering from recency bias by proclaiming it the greatest.

Henry Armstrong held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles at the same time. It's never been done or before since, even with adding in extra weights.

Jerzy Kukuczka did all 14 8000metre mountains in under 8 years, still only one of two people to do a winter ascent of K2 on the Polish line (no one has successfully recreated that and his climbing partner died on the descent).

Are the two main ones i can think of off the top of my head.

I doubt it's recency bias, more likely just complete ignorance.

I doubt many people, in the football world, will be aware of either of those. Certainly I only knew about the first one.

Carragher doesn't strike me as being particularly well read :)

Jerzy Kukuczka  was a beast, a chimney painter in the soviet union, who ate better on climbs than in real life. Had no money, he actually died cause his 2nd hand rope, bought in a market, snapped while he was climbing Lhotse's South Face (still not been done). His flight was cancelled once, so he walked to the airport he was going to in 3 days over huge peaks, solo, creating 2 new routes as he went.

Compared to the other much larger budget climbs, with better equipment, he had no specialised equipment as had no money to buy it so he had to do with what he could get his hands on.

Impressive. Can you point me to anywhere worth a read on the subject?

Check Alfie Shrubb - virtually unbeatable at every running distance from the mile up to 15 miles. He was so dominant they'd get the top runners in the world to run relays against him ... And he'd still win.

Not when they won the league. Francis signed after that and from my hazy memory there weren't any big signings in the league winning side.

I seem to recall guys like Gary Birtles were signed for £5,000 from non-league (or lower league teams).

Peter Shilton was a world record signing for a goalie I believe...

Well there was Peter Shilton for a start and he also signed John McGovern, John O'Hare and Archie Gemmill, who'd all previously won the league with Derby.

Apparently, when Shilton signed, Stoke had previously accepted a higher bid from Man Utd but the deal had fallen through because Man Utd hadn't been able to meet his wage demands.

Forest were well capable of competing financially with anyone in else in England at the time.

Forgot about him although I think he may have been the exception.

I just seem to recall a pretty low budget team with guys like Birtles, John Robertson etc and and a few other guys from Derby etc. As someone mentioned, Peter Taylor was an equally key part of building that team from obscurity (as,I think they did with Derby before that).

It's not how I recall it it but it;s quite probable I'm wrong.

The best bet is his book, but a quick look it is rare and costs £200, i wish i had kept mine. Googling his name will get a few blog posts with info from his book.

So the short answer is his book but it costs a fortune now, and feck knows where my copy is.

Book is called My Vertical World: Climbing the 8000-Metre Peaks. £200 now though :(

Just looked him up.

Aye and he was running like every 3 days as well  if you average it out, insane stuff.

Here you go

Transfers In[edit]

Pos Player From Fee Date
DF Scotland Kenny Burns England Birmingham City £150,000 July 1977
GK England Peter Shilton England Stoke City £325,000 September 1977
MF Scotland Archie Gemmill England Derby County £25,000 & P/E September 1977
DF England David Needham England Queens Park Rangers £140,000 December 1977

I don't think it's right to say they built it on budget buys or big fees.

They had very low fees with Birtles £2k, Lloyd £60k and of course Gemmill. They did also spend £1m on Francis and £600k for Woodcock.

Add to that the guys they picked up for free and the 5 or 6 lads already at the club, it really is a mixed bag in terms fees, although fair to say they spent relatively modestly.

I'm half way through 'i believe in miracles' just now. Well worth a watch for anyone that's not seen it.

Edit - Woodcock was sold for that, I've read it wrong.

Boo!

Heard a representative from a bookies on the radio earlier saying it was the first time they'd paid out on a 5000/1 sports single.

To put it in perspective, ant and dec or Jimmy Nail were only 1000/1 to get the Newcastle job a few years ago.
