I went camping in Cornwall for the Easter holidays, about ten years ago,Ā with my then girlfriend (now wife, surprisingly) without thinking much about the fact that Easter was in March that year.

The drive down from London was horrific, with typically bad holiday weekend traffic, but that would turn out to be the least of our worries. Ā

The first night was very cold and it rained. Lots. Ā The next day was worse, gale force winds, torrentialĀ rain, hail stones and evenĀ some snow chucked in for good measure. By nightĀ the tent had half blown away and the sleeping compartment was full of water.

At that point we abandoned ship and headed for the nearest hotel, which we were surprised to findĀ had a vacant room over Easter. Ā But the reason soon became clear. Ā TheĀ place was likeĀ a cross betweenĀ Fawlty Towers and the Bates Motel.

So yeah, always worth checking when Easter is before making yourĀ holiday plans.

Why's easter sunday so early this year ?

Aint religious so never paid attention - just looked for the hols

It's daft. The schools are off for Easter weekend, then go back for a week, then get the fortnight Easter holidays, but not at Easter!

Anyway it is indeed decided by the moon, or to be more precise the Sunday closest to the first full moon after the spring equinox, so it could happen any time during the month after March 21st.

The ecclesiastical rules are: Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the day of the vernal equinox; this particular ecclesiastical full moon is the 14th day of a tabular lunation (new moon); and the vernal equinox is fixed as March 21.

That's because schools don't have "Easter Holidays" anymore, they now have a "Spring Holiday" that will always be the first 2 weeks of April :ok:
