kmcca5
Were thinking of getting a dog, eldest is coming up 6 and youngest is 2 and a half. The youngest loves dogs and is a gentle wee soul, he plays with the dog at his child minders so knows the drill. Any advise on what not to do etc? Looking at a Bearded Collie puppy, 15 weeks old. AKA a Highland Collie (so i just read today) Thanks in advance for advise. Edited March 1, 2016 by kmcca5
Glasgowmancity
As I don't like dogs & the kids are banging on about wanting one, my answer would be around
phart
Bearded collies seem too rambunctious too have with essentially a toddler, it'll herd and nip, will jump up before it's trained not to etc. Plus need to keep them active and properly socialised or they become destructive. They're very rowdy for a puppy. Still they get on well and will spends ages running around together, but you'll obviously have to watch the dog jumping up and playing too hard once it grows a bit. If you're willing to put in the time etc, then it's not a bad dog, just a lot of work.

Might have to let this puppy go and borrow a dog and see how we get on with it.
jenblueeyes
My dad brought home a puppy while I was just a few weeks old. We had no issues though I had very clear boundaries on what I could and couldn't do with Cindy who was a typical terrier. I still remember being distraught when she died at 8 years old after eating rat poison in the local park. Upshot is...no right or wrong answers. phart
Yeah dogs and kids are great, but always got to be careful cause misunderstandings can happen if your child takes food/toys from the dog and no hierarchy is set, or maybe sticking fingers in eyes. hunchy
As has been said there is no right or wrong age its all about both dog and kids learning the boundaries and learning the warning signs from the dog.
Return of Yermaw
Go to your nearest SSPCA shelter. They will tell you which dogs in the shelter have been around kids all their lives and are really good with kids. Also much better taking a dog out of a shelter than getting a puppy from a breeder. Scunnered
Got our Labrador when my eldest was 3 and my youngest followed a year later. Ours came from a breeder as they are a friend of the family but I absolutely agree with the shelter sentiments. If we ever get another dog, which may actually be too difficult as I'll be absolutely distraught when this one goes, we'll take a dog in from a shelter. Kirk
Try and rescue if you can, so many dogs need a good home. I recently got a Husky from SHWA uk. Check out their fb if that could possibly interest you. They have details on their available dogs and how they are with kids and other pets etc. Defos try and rescue though
fishcumnock
95% of kids who get dogs don't walk them , fed up after about 6months then left to YOU to take care of it , so IMO only if you feel you have the time to take it on for 12/13 yrs then go ahead (I've had 6 )still got 2. This is also a very good point. I actually love the fact that getting a dog has got me up out my scratcher and out and about every day. ThistleWhistle
Got a greyhound and a 14 month toddler. Dog sleeps 18 hours a day, one half hour walk and totally sound with wee lass. We leave dog in the kitchen when baby is about and she's happy. Best 100 quid ever spent from Scottish Greyhound Sanctury.
