In 1939 soviets invaded Poland and that was one of the first big cities they occupied and took over finally. After Soviet Union collapse it became part of Ukraine. Soviets and Ukrainians put a lot of effort to get rid of any signs of Polish history there but even now wandering about Tarnopol streets you can see old sewer lids with "Kanalizacja Miasta Tarnopola" on it. Probably too expenive to change just for the sake of its new "identity". Charmful place at the moment but obviously neglected (like many places afected by soviet and post soviet era). Remember few good eateries and one realy good cafe on main promenade- with charecteristic dark green leather upholstery- can`t remember name and have no idea if it still exists (that was few years ago). Remember even in better hotels you couldn`t get warm water throughout the day, just at some specific hours. Hopefuly they sorted it out by now.
