However, there's an opportunity here to right an historical wrong, and I've already made a suggestion to that end. In 1902, William Spiers Bruce led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, having raised the funds himself to do it, and the expedition was very successful, establishing the first manned meteorological station in the Antarctic. However, his journey put a lot of noses out of joint as it was viewed by some as 'competition' for Robert Scott's antarctic expedition. As a result of this, his results were sidelined and no one from the mission was nominated for the polar medal. This is unique, every other British or commonwealth Antarctic expedition had members who received the polar medal. In recent years, Spiers' contribution has been acknowledged, indeed he set the standards for climate studies in the Antarctic and his work is now acknowledged as being more concerned with science, unlike many expeditions which concentrated more on publicity. The the website seems to be down at the moment, however when it's back up I'll post a link if anyone wants to support the idea of the RRS William Spiers Bruce.
