Windows 10

Came back to my sleeping PC to find Windows 10 apparently installing itself, uninvited

Restarted itself and started loading files and preparing to invade my computer, 1% at a time

Is this really happening - are they really moving into we've pestered you for weeks, now f--- you, w're gonna install ourselves anyway phase?

Anyway during the 2nd installation phase I turned the computer off and it seems to have 'failed to install' - ha ha - back to old version of windows

is this what it's going to be like from now on?

Is there no option to say either 'OK' or 'F--- the F--- off and stop f---ing installing f---ing shit on my computer'

I don't think I can ever remember hating a company/corporation/brand as much as Microsoft. Other than Bing.

Had a "narrow escape" myself the other day.

Left for about ten minutes, came back, found a pop-up counting down the few minutes until Windows 10 started installation. Stopped it right away. This was completely right out of the blue, I hadn't given permission at all for any upgrade. 

As you stop the countdown and are going the through the process to stop the installation they even try to trick you into merely postponing installation rather than cancelling it. Sneaky fokkers.

It's basically malware. Strange there's not more public outcry. Probably affects more people than the 'millennium bug' ever did.

Still, I'm not sure how angry I can get again, after listening to BK aka LovelyFoal.

You're goosed if your broadband is subject to a data cap/download limit because it downloads in the background without any prompting prior to doing the installation.

This sounds a bit like what happened to my brother last week. He's not very IT orientated so phones me for anything weird happening on his laptop.

First he called about Win 10 starting to install itself, which I think he eventually managed to get rid of, but a few days later he got a message from his service provider about hit data cap/download reaching his max. I didn't put 2+2 together but guessed it was something trying to download in the background. Will call him again today to see if he's got it sorted.

Is there an easy way to check what it could be and stop it running ? It's difficult for me to check with him by phone as opposed to having his laptop in front of me.

Seriously, shouldn't there be laws against doing this sort of thing? It's unsolicited malware. Even if it's legal, why should it be? Microsoft may have small print somewhere in California somewhere, but couldn't stand up and oppose this legal and digital encroachment?

It's as if you had an oil company, you buy fuel from them once, and in the act of purchase, you sign away the right for them years later to siphon off some of your fuel fro your car and replace it with a (possibly inferior or harmful) substitute at the time of its choosing.

Yes on all pc's that I want to keep on 7, main rig and gaming laptop are on 10 - despite what some folk have said earlier 10 is the best os for gaming - just hate the "Metro" overlay - you can change it all with the tools I mentioned (same for 8 and 8.1).

I actually do this both for a living (It tech for more years than I care to recall) and as a hobby (gamer)

If your not a gamer install Linux - I always recomend Mint (cinnamon) - best distro out the box for Pc and Mac former users.

If it started t install, it will have downloaded Win 10 in the background. Not sure how big it is, but it's likely to be at least a couple of GB. What's his download cap?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a class action suit about this in the US.

Having read a little about it only yesterday - it seems to be between 3-6GB. Not sure what by brother's cap is but 3-6 can screw with things for a few people. Pretty poor from MS and I do think they need to get a serious slap or fine.

For me it was just an annoyance so I didn't check many of the links posted by yourself and others.

Nah, not pish - the gwx tool is a great all in one though, lets you decide what's going on.

To be honest what's wrong with Microsoft,Apple and many of the major Linux\Android developers for the last few years is the forcing of change for changes sake on the end users - many of the changes can be quite usefull if you were allowed to choose what you want from them - but, they take a very dim view of users actually having any control.

Hardware is the same - they really don't want you upgrading iPads, Surface pro's etc so go out of their way to make it as hard as possible to get inside them  - no user serviceable parts etc - car manufacturers have cottoned onto this nonsense as well - and add in the nice "greenwashing" lie that buying new kit every year is somehow more environmentally friendly than making old kit last..
