It really is a bit of a joke. Suppose you could say Portugal are unbeaten, whereas the other 2 have lost 2 of their 3 games. The system isn't perfect, as Portugal knew they could get away with a draw, whereas if they'd been in Group A they might've felt they needed to win to be safe.... It's certainly fairer now there's 3 points for a win. Back at Mexico 86, Hungary were knocked out by Uruguay in the 3rd place table. Hungary had won a game whereas Uruguay had two draws and a defeat. As has been pointed our elsewhere, Albania played some really good attacking football in all 3 games, won one, should have got something with 10 men against the Swiss and held France until the 88th minute in a competitive game. Yet they're out. Northern Ireland were utterly useless against Poland and Germany, but by virtue of the fact that the Germans didn't score the 9 goals that they should have, they go through. Only 10 goals scored in that group, which doesn't sound too bad, except that Poland scored 5 of those in one game. iainmac1 Posted June 23, 2016 Share Posted June 23, 2016 They are in differnt groups so it is perfectly fair. The tie breakers were known long ago. In a 16 team tournament you can go out in the groups on 6 points where someone else goes through on 2 points. I love the 24 team format. It keeps the gorups interesting till the final game and gives teams a chance of progressing to the knockout stages who wouldn't normally have much chance.
