Padre Andrew
Any recommendations for hotels, and for things to see/do? Planning two clear days on a stop-over in October.

Loads to do mate, but obviously depends what you are into. There are some pretty tacky touristy type things and other not so. Off top of my head: Universal Studios, Drink a 'sling at Raffles, have a beer at the roof top bar of Marina Bay Sands, visit the Arab, Chinese or Indian Quarters and have a meal or just a,wander about. Visit one of the Hawker Centres for grub and Beer, Chinese War Museum, Fire Department Museum, Botanic Gardens, Clarke Quay for a meal, Singapore Zoo, Aquarium, Play golf at night under the floodlights, have a wander down Orchard Road and take in the obscene prices. The Zoo and Aquarium were fantastic and well worth going to. Raffles was underwhelming, and the 'Sling was shite and at £18 a go really wasn't worth it. Going to a Hawker Centre is a must for me. It's where a lot of the locals go if they are eating out. Basically a huge circle of stalls with various Street foods with picnic benches in the middle. It's very reasonably priced too. Chinese and Arab quarters were great. Even just a wander about in either is good fun. Chinese was manic, lots going on, street theatre, food stalls, tight little streets etc and the Arab area a lot more relaxed. I know I've mentioned food a lot but it really was the highlight of my trip and granted I had alot more time to check out these places. Fantastic place but its not cheap mate. Padre Andrew
Thanks. I've only got two days, so limited in how much I can spend. Where's best to stay? Loads of options coming up on websites, but I don't know where to go / where to avoid.

In terms of 'tourist' things to do the Zoo was probably the highlight. And as said go to a Hawker Centre for grub one night.
Angus_Young
OK mate doesn't have a huge experience of hotels but if yer on a budget the Holiday Inn on Clarke Quay will do the job. I can certainly vouch that it's in an excellent location. I say budget it will still set you back 100 quid a night.
aaid
I've been to Singapore a few times, both as a stopover and also with work. Really like the place. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago on holiday and was shocked at how extortionately expensive it is, although that might have had something to do with the previous few times I'd been there I'd been on expenses. God knows what it's like now with the value of the pound. A great melting pot of a place, really easy to get around most places. A fantastic range of foods, as has been mentioned earlier, the hawker centres are really good value. There's a cracking one next to Novena metro station. The Changi prison museum is very interesting although it's a bit tricky to get to.
Angus_Young
Newton Circus that one is called. East Lagoon was the other one I went to. Newton was defenitely better for food, although I enjoyed East Lagoon too as it's down near the water and is a bit bigger so was good for a few beers in the afternoon. Few of the stalls At Newton specialise in cracked crab. Tremendous.
Brummie Hibs
Night Safari and Zoo are good Universal Studios is good only for two rides: The Mummy and Transformers - the rest is poor but expensive to visit. I really liked the modern art gallery - but exhibits change all the time. The best thing about Singapore is it's food - but avoid their world class restaurants. Even though it is from Taiwan, the Din Tai Fung chain is the best Dim Sum ever! Getting away from city centre are the best places to eat - but no point in doing that if you are a tourist. I could rattle off loads of places around Katong area. Apart from that - it is a pretty boring place and glad I chose not to move over when my GF got a job there. She ended coming back disillusioned by the place after 9 months.
