Until Scottish football re-arranges it's calendar these humiliating and financially devastating exits will continue. It's July and both Edinburgh clubs are out.  What an utter shambles.

Hearts are out because they mistakenly thought a 0-0 draw away from home was a good result.

Aye, a lower division team getting knocked out on pens after winning in Denmark is a real shambles...

Drama queen...

The reality is that yet again there's a real danger that one team will be left in Europe past mid August and that could be thanks to a back door entry.

Hopefully this won't be the reality but I wouldn't bet against it.

Aye, in a nutshell, that ingrained mentality is what has been keeping us back for ages.

"Ach, a draw away fae home is not bad at all.."

It's unreal the amount of managers, players, journalists and even some of the fans still genuinely believe that.

2 out (Hearts result tonight one of most humiliating ever for a Scottish club and may have cost them a lot of money though they`d probably have lost in Russia and lost money on trip, Hibs pride intact but Hertha Berlin would have generated massive gate and especially TV revenue) and 2 through (Celtic after himiliation in Gibraltar and Aberdeen after being lucky to get to second round). Reality is there are no easy games and sadly clubs and countries probably consider Scottish opposition as a good draw. Anyway, not sure how ranking system works but presume wins by Hearts in last round and Hibs tonight (counts as victory I suppose) will help for future years.

Sorry it has nothing to do with the time of year..........it is down to ability and that is lacking

at all levels in our game.

Hungary, Romania, Poland, Sweden, Slovakia, Albania,  Iceland,  Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland, all played at Euro 2016, and all lost teams in the Europa League qualifiers last night.

Some of these teams even play right through the summer.

The fact is the early rounds in Europe stopped being a cakewalk decades ago...

partially true, but to play these games before the league even starts is crazy and rectifiable. The Hibs of October would take 4 off the non-match sharp Hibs of today.

Luxembourg league starts early August, Malta resume later the same month.

We need to stop making excuses, we are poor despite having great attendances for a country our size.

Rank rotten and descending.

It does have something to do with it. At Tynecastle last night you could see several of the players weren't match sharp, and one or two of the players (notably the left back and Sammon up front) were still getting used to playing together. Lack of ability (player and manager) is a bigger factor I wouldn't argue there, but it is wrong and simplistic to dismiss the issue of these effectively being pre-season games for Scottish clubs.

I can only assume teams 10+ games into their seasons are comfortably through to the next round?

Yes.

Ventspilis went marching through. Oh, wait...

But don't you realise that a team finishing 3rd in our 2nd tier should be knocking out the team who finished 4th in the Danish Superliga regardless?

Shouldn't underestimate how good a result the 3rd best team in our 2nd division going to Denmark and getting a 1-0 win is.

Neil Lennon "They were running on fumes in the end but they showed tremendous character to see the game out." As I say, shambolic planning. Their most important game of the season and they're dead on their feet.

How far do you think the Danes are into their season like?

The gap between seasons ending and starting is short due to their long winter break

Last game of 2015-2016 in the Danish Superleague was 29/05/2016 and they play friendlies in the 4 weeks or so before it restarts
