every so often we turn up a good youth side, that goes deep into these tournament

however since the late eighties our club sides have been refusing to give these youngsters a chance in their full sides playing journeyman pros from other countries ahead of them

they then disappear without a trace

I don't see that changing anytime soon

Aitchison looked a talent when he came on and scored at the end of last season. Will he even get into a squad this season?

Agree - These boys probably won't really get a sniff.

You look at clubs in Holland for example; Ajax regularly take through 5,6 sometimes even 10 boys per season, sell them on after a bit of game time, or keep them for the first team & this gives Holland a regular stream of players playing first team football from 16-18 within their own country.

it also helps the clubs who have assets to sell on

rather than ageing foreign pros putting them into the red and in some cases administration and liquidation

our game is run by half wits

Aitchison does look good.

Middleton is the stand-out player in this squad.

Watt is at Wolves, not PNE.

So did Calvin Miller - Best player in the world in his age group a couple of years back (won some award for that I am sure)

Would love to see more of these guys get a shot like Tierney has.

If anything we learned from the past youth Scotland squads, that filling our teams with old firm players don't really work. They just end up not making the first team and falling out the game for good or at best end up lower league journeymen.

Saying all that we seem be doing something right at this level. Qualified for the last 3 under 17s, so fingers crossed for number 4.

Calvin Miller still has every chance. He is 18, just signed a 3 year deal at Celtic about 4 months ago. He is in their development squad and has just been named in the Scotland U19 squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Sweden. Sounds like a pretty good progression.
