The only possibile, and highly unlikely way I can see how the referendum could play a role, is if GS is playing a team who are split 50/50 and has bad blood between individuals through indyref arguments . That or he is only playing a team who share his position instead of best man for the job. Basically Scotland had nothing of itself until then. Since then Scotland has become a more confident nation through other means, mainly political.
