"Breaking a five-day media silence, the Shadow International Development Secretary last night announced: "I'm standing for First Minister of Scotland and I intend to win."

He added: "I want to bring Scotland back together after the referendum. There is so much to be proud of in Scotland but so much we have to change. I've travelled to every part of our country and I know that people want us to get on with tackling poverty and increasing prosperity. As leader of Scottish Labour and as First Minister of Scotland that is exactly what I will do."

Does he think if he wins the vote to be labour leader he actually becomes first minister as well

Murphy took a few days to announce this because he's been busy. As one of Hlloween's favourite characters, he's had a full schedule of hauntings to plan.

I love the way Labour politicians constantly go on about tackling poverty, especially Scottish ones. The reality is partly that Labour need the continuation of poverty for their vote. I look forward to hearing what Jim et al's plans are for this great social re-engineering, given that any attempt at tackling poverty would have to start with a truly progressive tax system - which Labour doesn't want it's Scottish branch office to have power over.

Is it not a requirement that anyone standing for Scottish branch manager has to commit to the goal of FM?

Murphy is bookies favourite, but the value is on Findlay as I reckon he'll take the majority of the TU votes.

Hmmm. Cant see it. I dont think Murphy would have entered unless he was sure he had shored up enough support to win. Would be damaging to his profile to be defeated in a leadership election. I think the delay in his declaration has been him securing backers.

I read an article by Findlay the other day and thought he was a serious contender. Heard him on radio last night and watched him on TV - he's nowhere near ready for leadership or the media profile. Sarah Boyack is probably the best of a bad bunch IMO.

For a whole host of reasons, Murphy is the best choice for absolutely destroying Labour.

I've no doubt it will be Murphy, I was just saying that value is in Findlay if anyone fancies a flutter, he will definitely take the majority of the TU vote though. Probably won't be a separate market on that though.

If Murphy wins it will be the nail in the coffin that followed the bullet in the head that was Johann, and the brutal sodomisation that was Grey.

Enjoying the analogies :)

Boyack would be a steady hand on the tiller for Labour. The Walter Smith after Berti Vogts type of candidate. However Murphy would be like going straight from Vogts to Levein.
