I've been made redundancy twice myself.

first time I hit the skids a bit and was feeling sorry for myself.

Second time I just went on a holiday.

You need to get some structure in your life and make sure you get up in the morning get showered dressed and out in the world. Nothing more depressing than waking up at 11 on a work day when your not on holiday

Make a plan of what you want to do next with your life, what you need to do to get there and start at the first thing on your list.

Jobs are so flakey now I doubt it will be the last time either of us get made redundant but you just need to get off your ars$ and crack on with it.

P.S don't take redundency as a personal thing, it happens if your in the wrong place at the wrong time. Place that let me go first time round came back to me when budgets were back to normal and offered me another job!

If your not just having a bad morning you should go see a doctor mate.

For less serious stuff, a bit of exercise is always good for cheering you up

Good advice - do it today... in fact, do it now.

This type of illness - and that is what it is - doesn't fix itself.

You may need some meds, or a sympathetic ear from someone outwith your current friend/family circle - but don't hang about.

It gets better, really it does, and remember, YOU were not made redundant, the furking job was. Cliche, I know - but it's true.

There are more jobs around and, as the weather improves, and the days get 'longer' and not so dark and dismal, you'll sort this out.

Good luck.

Thanks mee . Lost all motivation just about to leave the house these days . Made redundant in November and morale self confidence plummeted

You were not made redundant mate, only your job was. You, sir, retain your brain, your arms and legs, and the rest of your body. Do something with them now you have been given a wonderful opportunity to retrain or explore a career change.

Have you contacted PACE - Partnership Action for Continuing Employment ? If not why the feck not ? They can provide first contact advice on benefits, retraining, CVs, interview skills etc. If you are still looking for a job then volunteer to help in a community project. Have a cup of tea with a pensioner or help out at community centre or something.

Get up sharp every morning. Exercise, shower and shave. Then DO STUFF. Make a list the previous night. Take pleasure in applying big ticks to said list daily.

And remember that masturbation is a form of self-abuse.

Agree 100%...I was also made redundant a while back and ended up at a bit of a low point. One thing I started doing was waking up early, getting a good breakfast inside me and going walking(sometimes 10 or 15 miles)whilst listening to a shitload of podcasts...It definitely changed my outlook on things and it's still a habit I keep now.

Good luck! I hope things get better soon for you :ok:

Not working can be a real curse, far too much time to think and lots of pressure to find the next thing. I've been there and it is a tough place.

best advice is to keep active, maybe do some voluntary stuff if it helps structure your time. exercise def helps and remember the importance of the sun, which in Scottish Feb is an endangered species,,,but spring is just round the corner.....

I'm there at the moment. Gave up a good, well-paid job to gain fame and fortune in Italy, but went tits up because the stupid bastards speak Italian. Came back here with tail between the legs, but glad I gave it a go.

Gold clubs getting nicked by Orraloon has disrupted me a bit, but other than that, I'm getting by alright. Few interviews lined up, so we'll see how it goes.

Keeping out the tavern is the hardest thing.

Everyone's different, and I really hope Naranjito has a wee chat with his doc with a view to having a great future ahead of him.

I wish I was over there, mate.

I'd be more than happy to spend some time with you.

- definitely talk to a doctor

- go to a Bible-believing church. The folk there will really care.

- get out and do stuff. Volunteer. Get involved. You can't help but meet people.

You are in my prayers, and YOU ARE LOVED!

Pretty much what everyone else has said. Have been made redundant once and took VR once - I prepared a list of all the things I'd wanted to do (cheaply) but never had time when I was working.

Stuff like going to the Gallery of Modern Art and visiting the Kelvingrove art gallery as I hadn't been since it had been done up. Had a great time ticking them off. I also love going to the cinema during the day - feels slightly naughty but you get the place to yourself and there are no queues at the nachos counter.

Gave myself projects round the house too - re-designed the garden and I read somewhere that having a green kitchen was good luck.....so I repainted it and got offered a job shortly afterwards!

Naranjito82 having been in a profession where periods of unemployment were frequent , can I give practical advice that worked for me

set your alarm, Have a bath/shower first thing in the morning , put some clean clothes on (don't sit in your jammies all day, you won't want to go out !) , go for a long walk anywhere, knock on companies doors with your CV , go to the library even a couple of times a week, read read read ,
go to the local public gym ,
you can do short public fund courses in the evening/day very cheap or even free for the unemployed all the details at libraries,You will be surprised at the things available to the unemployed , there are many groups organisations willing to help

you have to force yourself to to do physical/mental activities this will in turn help you mental wellbeing and break up your day. Giving you the energy to apply for jobs

re-build yourself up and give yourself little rewards for getting out and about.

Good Luck !

Jobs are out there and jobs that you can do mate so tell yourself that first and foremost. We all know there are jobs waiting to be done as that is why Poles are swarming over here for work. Most of these jobs are jobs Scots or any Brits turn there noses up at such as catering jobs but those can lead to much better things. Take me I started working (after years of ill-health and feeling of uselessness) at catering on trains aboard ScotRail trains and years later now work aboard the Caledonian Sleeper. Banter is great and you see the world. Think on.

Also I suggest having a crack at a time consuming hobby at home. Try your hand at writing a book for example. Not only will it employ your brain and keep negative thoughts away but who knows it may show you have talents you never knew you had.

Best of luck to you and remember things can only get better.

Military an option ?

Constant recruitment, numerous options to pick your career from, meet many people and some become friends for life, travel to various places etc.

Total fresh start.

Remember, there are jobs that are not frontline if that is not your thing :ok:

Very pleased to see the positive advice and general support being offered here.

We’ve got a family member just now who’s at a really low point – can’t see the point of anything, just about giving up. It’s hard to make them see they’re valued, loved, and worthwhile with plenty to offer and lots to live for. I guess some people just get to a place where that just doesn’t seem real, even though in their hearts they know it’s true.

Hang in there. Go and see your GP and above all talk about it. There are other people in a very similar place to you – you’re not alone.

One thing we’ve found helps with this relative (and it helps his kids too) was the Black Dog book. They are several You Tube clips of this:

Good luck. :ok:
