grass was long i recall and we never looked liked scoring

only saw highlights of home game ; not at the races again i recall

ray stewart (west ham) appears on both team sheets - another albiston default safe selection i recall

pretty bland selection overall tbh

sharp playing - never figured out how he made the squad

Mind the game in 86 being during the October holidays, which was a big deal as you could watch it live during the afternoon (no floodlights at Lansdowne Road IIRC). Remember it being a bit of a missed opportunity for us. I also had a stinking cold and felt garbage sitting watching it. At least these days I'd have a few beers.

February 87 was a grim night, we were poor (as Mr Sox said above McClair FFS!) and it also started snowing on us in the North Enclosure. We also had to endure two guys in car coats that looked like extras from Budgie screaming "get intae these tatties, get intae these 2p a pund tatties" for almost the entire game. I mind ending myself when my dad asked me if they were those casuals everyone talked about.

Didn't recall Ireland's goal being as early as the 8th minute but I do remember being hugely impressed by the size of the away support, the biggest I'd seen at Hampden. It was also amusing at the time hearing Celtic songs being sung with Irish accents...

Was it not a case of the football match was on the Wednesday night and Scotland v Ireland in the 5 nations was on the Saturday so the Irish made a long holiday of it?

Remember the 2003 game how heated it was getting after the Irish scored in the North Stand, as there was loads of wee Glasgow Neds running around in Celtic shirts (sure guy few rows down from me was ready for lamping one).

Do not remember much of the game except we were never in it and was only when Paul Devlin came on (his debut?) that we actually started playing well.

Was Devlin's debut not vs Canada at Easter Road?

Funnily enough I just watched the highlights of the 2-1 win at Lansdowne Road on youtube, laughed at the boo's starting when Burley plays a crossfield ball to McCann who sets up Hutchison for the equaliser.

Never went to the 2003 game, sat at watched it a mates house. Sullivan handed Morrison's goal to him on a platter with a poor punch I'm sure?

Aye, Canada was his debut. Seemed like Vogts had us playing a match almost every week then that it was hard to keep track lol

2000 game in Dublin was a cracker of a trip, I was just fresh out of school so my dad took me across as my 18th birthday was only a few weeks off.

I was at all the Dublin games and 03 in Glasgow. Still in college in 87 so couldn't afford to go.

86 was a poor game. Big disappointment for us having got a great draw in Brussels a month earlier.

2000 was pretty miserable. Poor home crowd boosted by a bunch of bigots who only showed up to boo Rangers players.

2003 was great. Brian Kerr's first game. Over after 15 minutes. Scottish Celtic fans seemed to have been allowed through the barriers to stand in the away end. Drinking with the Tartan Army near Hampden was good. Kilmarnock was good the night before too for the U21 game although we were well beaten. My Ryanair flights cost less than my parking in Dublin airport.

Also cheap flights in 07 to the B game in Airdrie. Mentioning to my mate "There's Gordon Strachan with his 2 daughters" When one of them appeared to overhear and looked around I realised she was probably his wife.

Some great players in those 1986 and 87 Ireland teams.

Still can't believe Stevie Crawford got 25 caps for us

Some of my first memories of Scotland was the 1988 campaign, and for the whole campaign Roxburgh just could not get the team to gel together and seemed to make sweeping changes in every game.

For some reason Roxburgh just didn't rate Miller and McLeish as a partnership, and insisted that Gough and Hansen were going to be the defense that takes us to the Euro finals.... yet by the end of the campaign Hansen showed again that he could not be bothered playing for Scotland and Roxburgh ended up going back to Miller and McLeish.

Sure Strachan said in his book that the game v Ireland at Hampden was when he considered quieting Scotland.

Never understood it to be honest, as we were not in a period of transition or anything as those teams were still the core of the 86 World Cup squad, plus a few extra faces to freshen up (really Souness and Kenny Dal were the only players to call it a day.... and Andy still went begging to both of them to keep stay with the team a few games longer).

Regarding Crawford.... I do not think that was out of choice, just the fact he was scoring goals for Dunfermline in he SPL and there was nobody else to call upon except him, Thompson, Kyle and Kenny Miller (though round about 2002-03 it was just down to luck if we got him as he struggled to stay fit longer than 5 minutes in those days)..... we were so desperate that there was serious calls at the time that Crawford and Craig Brewtser should be the Scotland front line).

Went to the game in 2003 - had to endure arseholes with Glaswegian accents amongst the Ireland support taunting us about being 'Tartan Army H U N S' and all that shite.

Thoroughly miserable evening. One of the many low points of Berti's reign.

That's my lasting memory of that game too. I liked to see Ireland do well until that match. Now, I think I'd rather England won if the two sides played.

Their grooming of young Scottish, English and Northern Irish players has done little to change my mind of them.

The grooming? What on earth are you talking about? If a player born on the island of Ireland wants to play for Ireland then they're entitled to do so. Sames goes for Scots/English with Irish parents or grandparents

The grooming?

Getting in to young boys before they are old enough to know what they want. Making them feel special and showering them with gifts etc to sway them into playing for Ireland. Irritated me for a long time and I have to agree, the only time I want England to win is when they play Ireland.

Anyway, back to the thread. Had a peek at Greenscene.me about some of the games from days of yore. A wee look at the last competitive game between the two sides in Glasgow in 1987 and two strong sides out there. Ireland had the likes of McGrath, Lawrenson, Stapleton, Aldridge and Houghton in their ranks. We still had McStay, Cooper, McCoist amongst others.

Two strong teams back then.
