Boynze
hibs defender that celtic tried to sign, darren someone? must be around 26 now, not sure where he is playing, but again was tipped for greatness
Deeklipse
Darren McI…something. Moved to Celtic then changed his mind and was allowed to come back. Never made it and I think was finished at Hibs when he head butted a Hearts/ex-Hearts player (Calum Elliot?). I think he ended up at a lower league team. Riordan and O'Connor should have done a lot more than end up trawling round lower league/amateur teams in their early 30s. I also think Paul McStay should get a nod here despite his huge amount of caps. I only started watching football in the late 80s. He really must have gone great guns for a couple of years early in his career to build up the reputation he gained. He was absolutely brutal later on albeit playing in a very poor Celtic team. Perhaps he should have gone to England when he got the chance to fulfil his potential. (Tin hat on...)
GHfaeGTA
McStay was absolutely outstanding when he was younger. Should have moved to continent.

I know a lad who played at Brechin with him and he was in some clip by then. He's like 20 odd now and done
Auchinyell Sox Change
IIRC he says in Richard Gordons book that just before the WC 86 campaign, Stein had told him, Neil Simpson and Paul McStay that one of them would be Souness partner in the center of midfield for the qualifiers, but Cooper had to pull out injured, and McStay got the nod and basically never looked back as he went out and scored 2 goals that night.Cooper and Simmie 2 great club servants , but at the time probably too much competition for them to step up Connor and Bett on the go for Dons around this time ? WC'

Was punted (see what I did there) by hibs for being a bad influence in the dressing room, allegedly. His performances for the hibernians whilst on loan from man utd were awesome, unfortunately he never signed for hibs until a couple of years later by which time he was average at best

Orraloon
Lee Wilkie :-) Not sure somebody who got 11 caps fits the "never quite made it" category?
GHfaeGTA
surely Wilkie deserves to be in the list of "never a prospect but somehow made it"?

Orraloon
surely Wilkie deserves to be in the list of "never a prospect but somehow made it"? Wilkie was a pretty decent player. Folk seem to forget that he was only 23 when he got his first serious knee injury which effectively ended his international career.
