Wilkie was a pretty decent player. Folk seem to forget that he was only 23 when he got his first serious knee injury which effectively ended his international career.

Wilkie, apart from two horrendous games against both of the then old firm, which he got slaughtered for hence many having that lasting memory, of him being shite never let scotland down and exceeded expectation a number of times.

He was good with the ball, a monster in the air, relatively quick and a great leader. I thought he'd go on to get loads of caps for us. His bad press re those two games have transcended into almost fact that he was shite. Far from it. Genuinely sad loss for our team from a guy who showed he could perform well in a Dundee side full of class players at the time, and at international level.

Before anyone mention the 0-6 Holland game, Wilkie was in my opinion, one of few pass marks.

John Kennedy according to some was gonna be one of

the best centre halves we have seen due to one performance vs barca. Wilkie's against Holland in the 1-0 at hampden in the play off against another world class side, was equally, if not more impressive.

Aye, he was a potential future Scotland captain if he had stayed injury free IMO. At the same age he was a far, far better player than Colin Hendry or anybody else since then.

Anyone mentioned Gareth Williams? He was highly rated when he was at Forest and played a couple of games under Bertie.

Touted as the new Graeme sounds I remember. Mind watchin him in an under 21 match at Easter rd and thought he was immense. Don't know what ever happened to him though.

Was a stand out at Forest. He got transferred out for a million and then suffered a couple of bad injuries. Had high hopes of him, was part of the Bertie "Scattergun" selection years.

I liked Wilkie. Prone to the odd bombscare moment, but no worse than Grant Hanley is just now.

For the 0-6 game against the Netherlands, there was a story going around not long after that just before the teams went out a well known BBC reporter walked up to Wilkie and said to him "you know Dundee are going to go bust next week?"... but he was one of the "better" players that night.

Have seen that story going round on forums a few times. I think it's true. Especially considering the form this certain wänker of a journalist has.

Sums up all that's wrong with our football media and indeed the midset a few so called Scots have.

Mates brother is a Dundee fan and knows a bit about the in's and out's of the club, and that was when I first heard it, but like you since then I have seen it pop up a number of times on Forums.

Its a shame his career panned out the way it did (recall just before he was out with the injury that he was linked with a big money move to Shakhtar Donetsk) as think he would have got better with time.

I seem to remember him being appalling at home against the Faroes in 2003. The general feeling around me that day was 'thank Christ we're not playing anyone half decent'.

Appeared to effect Rab Douglas more than anyone that night......

c mon did we really think we'd not get hammered v holland in the away game?

if we had lost 1-0 away to Faro islands in a play off we'd expect to thrash them at home a few days later.

Holland were told to get a fkin grip and get in their asses to euro 2004 and no jocks defense/goal keeper was gonna get in their way.

I went back and had a look at the goals

Wilkie and even Pressely don't actually do much wrong.

First goal: has anyone ever been skinned as badly as McCann by sniejder?
What is he even doing in the middle of the park?
Wilkie probably could do a bit more, but not at fault.
Rab Douglas all over the place with the 2nd.
VanNistelrooy is completely unmarked for the 3rd.
Meanwhile Wilkie is marking space.
Wilkie is so far away, that it looks like Bertie has told him to mark space and not a man.
Wilkie gets done by VanNistelrooy for the 4th
Gavin Rae not close enough to his man for the 5th (McCann could probably have done more though)
Not sure if it's Maurice Ross or Jackie McNamara at left-back that completely exposes the defense for the 6th. But it was Barry Ferguson who probably should have been marking VanNistelrooy.

the 4th onwards hardly mattered as we were screwed by that point. It was an impossible situation - a bit like playing chess against a far better player and then finding out you forgot to put your queen on the board.

Short of buidling a human wall between the posts, I can't see how we could got through this game without getting thrashed.

The dutch attackers were like the incredible hulk on viagra.

Did someone not pull out between the two games and as a result we had to completely change our midfield that night? (Refuse to watch video as scars are still sore from that night)

Today is actually the first time I've watched the goals again.

Can anyone remember what our line up was that night?

Douglas, McNamara, Pressley, Wilkie, Naysmith, Fletcher, Ferguson, Rae, McCann, Dickov, McFadden.

I have this weird idea that it was

Dickov

McFadden McCann Rae Fletcher

Ferguson

Naysmith Wilkie Pressley McNamara

Douglas

That can't be right is it???
