If we had gone in and helped the rebels properly we would have been in a position to strengthen one group who might have been more moderate and more open to western ideas and could have stopped Islamic state getting so much power so quickly. I asked him his view on the conflict and he went on about Muslim vs Christianity. He said Assad was Muslim and that he was forced out of Syria as he was a christian and went on a huge rant that Muslim refugees could not be trusted. A total mess and I feel sorry for all refugees. A russian general walks into an american embassy in iraq and gives them an hours warning of the airstrikes- telling them to get their people out of the " strike zones". "Moderate" in this context most likely means "our guys". Putin was in the United Nations on Monday talking about this to Obama, gave a big speech. Your enemies enemy is your friend. Assad in Damacus has been buying ISIS oil and focusing his attention on the opposition. Found this article which pretty much backs up this guy I was speaking to. It seems to me that Assad has an uneasy (and I think alliance is too strong) but call it a understanding with ISIS for the moment, and concentrates on destroying the opposition first before presenting a fait accompli to the West in, "I'm now the only game in Syria, back me and we can all destroy ISIS". phart Posted October 6, 2015 Share Posted October 6, 2015 (edited) Pretty amusing that after 3 days of Russian Bombing swathes of land is now available for relocation in Syria, yet we've been "bombing ISIS" in the area for over a year and it was ineffectual. Russia managed to put troops on the ground as well, without them immediately defecting to Al Qeada and handing over all the fancy weapons to ISIS.
