Trouble is when the trouble started in syria the rebels were made up of various groups not just those from Islamic state. If we had gone in and helped the rebels properly we would have been in a position to strengthen one group who might have been more moderate and more open to western ideas and could have stopped Islamic state getting so much power so quickly.

Who knows maybe the plan was to let Islamic state rise in power so at some point a western led coalition can go in and take over the whole area

Met a Syrian exile in tiblisi, who spoke english.

I asked him his view on the conflict and he went on about Muslim vs Christianity.

He said Assad was Muslim and that he was forced out of Syria as he was a christian and went on a huge rant that Muslim refugees could not be trusted.

A total mess and I feel sorry for all refugees.

I seem to remember you posting a while back (possibly even over a year ago) about Syria and the connection to the war in Ukraine, with the low oil price to cripple the Russian economy etc.

A very, very interesting read. Any further info on this?

Syria and Ukraine are of interest to Both Russia and NATO hence all the clashing. Russia started air strikes in Syria just a wee while ago. I'll post a link to a general overview, i'm not 100% sure how to answer.

In a number of global trouble spots, including Syria, Ukraine and others, the two powers’ interests potentially overlap in a number of ways. The reality is that in the last decade, from Iraq to Libya and Syria to Ukraine, the United States has consistently misjudged its ability to control and manage events on its own. It’s now time for Obama to bite the bullet, meet Putin, and see if any concrete scope for furthering American national interests via engagement with Russia exists.

On Syria, the United States’ latest strategy - to “train and equip” so-called moderate rebels - is a clear failure. Barely any rebels have actually been trained, and the first batch concluded their training by crossing into Syria from Turkey and immediately surrendering their American-supplied arms and equipment directly to al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria.

Moreover, Moscow has indicated it wants to cooperate with Washington in the fight against Islamic State. Secretary of State John Kerry already stated that Islamic State is the greatest national security threat to the United States, while Russia also genuinely fears the terrorist group. Thousands of Russian citizens from Chechnya and the North Caucasus are now fighting with extremists in Syria, and Russia fears the jihadist threat could spread northwards into Central Asia or even Russia itself.

The Russians will be bombing whoever is the biggest threat to Assad, as they're propping him up. "Moderate" in this context most likely means "our guys".

Putin was in the United Nations on Monday talking about this to Obama, gave a big speech. So weird that it is getting reported as some general gives a 2 hour warning.

Was speaking to a fairly well informed guy and he was telling me that Assad is sort of in league with ISIS. Your enemies enemy is your friend. Assad in Damacus has been buying ISIS oil and focusing his attention on the opposition.

Found this article which pretty much backs up this guy I was speaking to.

It's a very good article when it comes to geo-politics.

Assad is playing a canny game, and IMHO the degradation of the opposition will force them to capitulate, and then this will clear the way for Russia, the West and Assad to then focus on ISIS.

Surprise, surprise this narrative is exclusively not reported in our media.

A "Sunni" business man reported in TIME. Linking Bashar the Shia Muslim to the ultra religious Sunni ISIS. doesn't really sound credible to me.

"As the militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, has seized vast territories in western and northern Iraq, there have been frequent accounts of fighters' capturing groups of people and releasing the Sunnis while the Shias are singled out for execution.

ISIS believes that the Shias are apostates and must die in order to forge a pure form of Islam"

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/middle-east/4-questions-ISIS-rebels-use-to-tell-Sunni-from-Shia/articleshow/37257563.cms

"They took out the prisoners and sorted them into two groups, Sunni and 670 Shias. The fighters grilled the Sunni group, asked them to recite prayers, and interrogated them about family backgrounds. Some Shia prisoners tried to pass themselves off as Sunni. They were discovered and returned to the Shia line-up...

"According to the UN, the prisoners(shia) were lined up in four rows. They were told to kneel, and then shot. The UN said a handful survived by playing dead."

Why would Assad be working with religious fanatics that think him an apostate also they're being armed by the US via other Sunni regimes and given medical aid by Israel. While threatening his sovereignty. He's probably hitting political enemies though, but not because he is in league with ISIS, merely the opportunity is there.

I could be wrong though.

The article was just something that backs up what I was told by an in the know guy. It seems to me that Assad has an uneasy (and I think alliance is too strong) but call it a understanding with ISIS for the moment, and concentrates on destroying the opposition first before presenting a fait accompli to the West in, "I'm now the only game in Syria, back me and we can all destroy ISIS".

Pretty amusing that after 3 days of Russian Bombing swathes of land is now available for relocation in Syria, yet we've been "bombing ISIS" in the area for over a year and it was ineffectual.

Russia managed to put troops on the ground as well, without them immediately defecting to Al Qeada and handing over all the fancy weapons to ISIS.
