Not having much of a mechaical brain, when the wife's car started strugglinh to start, I took it to Evans Halshaw where she had bought it to find out what was wrong. After making the diagnosis, they gave her a quote of over £300 to get it fixed.

A quick visit to McConnechy's just down the road, the car was fixed for £75.

Gee whiz, they (EH) know how to charge.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT, use major dealerships for repairs. Shower of bast*rds. Use http://www.goodgaragescheme.com/or some other similar local network to source a decent local garage. Found a great wee, local garage I didnt even know existed this way and they were first class.

Would agree with this, better with a recommendation from somewhere/someone. I use the one my folks use and the guy is great. Works for himself, really thorough, great service and price and if something doesn't need done immediately he won't push it.

I asked about this when I bought my most recent motor and was told using any other garage will affect my warranty.

I don't think this is true and typical of the bull$hit we get from garages. Depends on the garage/dealer right enough but Im sure you can get other (approved?) garages to do work as long as they use dealer parts.

From Good Garage Scheme:

"If your vehicle is under warranty, it can still be serviced by a Good Garage Scheme member without invalidating the warranty conditions. For more information on Block Exemption, go to our Car Service page."

And from the Car Service Page:

"Do I need to take my car to a main dealer for its service?

European Commission rules on car block exemption came into full effect in October 2003. This new ruling allows independent garages the same access to technical information on your car from the manufacturer, and more importantly, it means you do not need to go back to a franchise dealer to retain warranty cover."

I was told that a garage even saying this to you is now illegal due to some EU law/rule. When I got my Clio last February Renault dealer said it to me and when I said to them my regular garage told me it was illegal to claim this they started back tracking like mad.

Thanks for this and everyone for the info. What was particularly annoying was that, when I mentioned I had got a cheaper quote elsewhere and quoted their (EH) price promise that they would refund the difference, they told me that the price promise only refers to other car dealers, not garages. So, if I had got EH to do the work and then got the cheaper quote from McConnechy's I wouldn't have been able to claim the price difference from them. I phoned them up today and asked for the terms and conditions of their price promise but they weren't forthcoming with it "Refer to he website" they said. The website only shows the details of the price promise for buying a car. Ggrrrr

I had a major issue with them at Sighthill... my old Astra kept cutting out. They farted around and changed EMS and some sensors. No avail, this cost me more than £300. Eventually they realised there was a sensor in the wheel which was causing the problem - when they discovered this they tried to charge me another £300 to replace it. Clearly they had no idea what they were doing first time round and were just changing components in hope of getting lucky....

I asked them about this and they started to get evasive. Long story short I called the wonderful Edinburgh Council consumer advice line and they told me they were obligated to provide 'expert fault finding' and after a standard letter from them they gave up and fitted it for free.

clueless...
