I would agree. My first ever game was the Spain 84 game, he scored an absolute beauty that night. He scored a similar one in Belgium not longer afterwards but I do always remember there been a big media thing about him not doing as well for Scotland as he was doing for Liverpool. When you looked at him from Liverpool from 78 to about 84 he was outstanding, probably world class, but he never really produced that level for Scotland in that time period aside from, as you say, certain games and goals. He wasn't consistently great for Scotland and considering some of the diddy teams at international level at the time it could be argued that 30 goals was a poor return from 102 games. He possibly/probably had a far better team around him at Liverpool however? He was a good player for us but he could have been so much more.

Thing is - during the period you are talking about 78-84, when he was at his peak - it wasn't exactly a poor Scotland team, a fair few of his Liverpool teammates played alongside him and we had one of the greats as manager. It's really difficult to put your finger on it but there is just this nagging doubt. You really couldn't look at any of the three World Cups he went to as successful for him personally.

Arguably, during this period, Souness was a much more influential and important player for Scotland and the reverse was probably true at Liverpool.

No need to be abusive. You can pick out certain games and certain goals over the course of his 102 caps and given the success and impact he had at club level, I think he underachieved at International level.

Not being abusive pal ??

Thought you winding me up with your post that Kenny was an underachiever !!

I wanted to check something some facts about his international career, so dug out my copy of his autobiography.

This is how he ends the chapter on Scotland.

I am not happy with what I achieved at International level. Then again, I helped my country to four World Cup finals, one of which I missed through injury. For a nation of Scotland's small size it was an achievement for us simply to qualify. But, if my self-belief had been stronger, maybe I could have helped Scotland to achieve more. It was such a contrast to my success overseas with Liverpool.

There you have it, the man's own words.

Ian Munro 1979 v Argentina. The only full back to bend a baw oot the park then in again for the linesman no to see it. Then again the ash dust fae the terracing used to blind you. Coming out of the park in they days you looked as if you had been doon the pits.

Souness used to take pelters off the fans for most of his Scotland career. Never understood it myself, but the consensus seemed to be that he was too much of a poser...

That Scots are somehow prouder than most nations to represent their country. When it comes to singing the national anthem, our players either seem too embarrassed, too "cool" or don't know the words.......(this includes the Scots born & bred).........We were completely shown up at the recent England game both on and off the field when it came to passion!!!!! (and ability)

:hammer:

Andy smith should have been called up when he scored 30+ goals for Dunfermline but was overlooked due to his bowl cut and the team that he played for.

Amoruso would have made a great Scotland captain and would have been more passionate about playing than most of the squad

Jim Leighton was a poor goal keeper by 1998 and should never have started in France

Only 1 of the above is true ;-)

Sorry to contradict you, but he did not. His goal v Spain was KennyDal's last at international level.

The goal v Belgium was in 78-79.
