Caledonian Craig
Also taking it on from there many here often have sung the praises of Graham Alexander yet he never even played in the EPL. Also people are warming to the defensive partnership of Martin and Hanley but there is precious little EPL experience there.
ParisInAKilt
I don't disagree. The EPL isn't the be all and end all. And would rather Bannan or anyone would play elsewhere, including the championship if they were playing regularly.

Better with first team football in the Championship than warming the bench in the EPL. It is just that some seem to think if you aren't in the top flight you can't do a job for Scotland which is complete nonsense.

Caledonian Craig
Except he did If you are trying to argue the point then perhaps we MUST drop Marshall (Cardiff), Hanley (Blackburn), Martin (Norwich), Maloney (Wigan), May (Sheff Wed) etc etc etc. Just because a player has not sparkled in the EPL doesn't mean they cannot do a very good job for Scotland. It has been proven in the past that is a falsehood.

Caledonian Craig
Apologies hannibal but would help if you more than just correct a post and more add an opinion. If you agree with my basic point then sorry for my response but if you don't then my original post stands.

I would rather they were all playing in the EPL or abroad but if they need to drop down to the championship i dont have a problem with it. I think it is important for Bannan to start getting a game every week especially at this stage in his career. This is in his 7th season and only has 119 appearances, it should be double that
aaid
Sorry that is tosh. And in any case it is just not 45 minutes we are talking about here (and what a 45 minutes against the world champions). He has been a regular in the Scotland side in recent times when we have improved immeasurably and our results have improved so evidently he hasn't let us down either. Also just remember this forray to Bolton will be his first spell outside the EPL where, until now, his career has been in the EPL with Aston Villa and Palace. Apart from previous loan spells at Leeds, Derby and Blackpool. Still I'm sure that Neil Lennon will be able to get the best out of him unlike Alex McLeish, Paul Lambert, Nigel Clough, Simon Grayson, Ian Holloway, Tony Pulis and Colin . The best thing that Shaun Maloney does for Scotland is keep Barry Bannan out of the team.
Caledonian Craig
Apart from previous loan spells at Leeds, Derby and Blackpool. The lion's share of his games have been in the EPL though and in any case being an EPL player or a Championship player makes no difference as to what job you can do for Scotland. Adam has had success in EPL but been dross for Scotland whereas aforementioned Graham Alexander had very little EPL experience but did an admirable job for us. Fairbairn
I think Bannan is vastly over rated by a lot of the TA. The fact that Maloney who has barely kicked a ball for Scotland in about 30 caps keeps him out the team speaks volumes. Both of them are all fur coat and no knickers. 1320lichtie
The EPL is to physical for the wee man. Needs to go abroad, would get top flight in Spain no bother. England doesn't suit him.

Funny, in the last two games I thought Maloney had the shot which led to the OG v Georgia, scored the first v Poland and won the free-kick which led to the 2nd goal. Caledonian Craig
How can our best player on the pitch in the first half against the world champions in Dortmund be 'not very good at all'? How the f@ck have we managed to patch together such a run of results with a player in the side who is 'not very good at all'? I am stunned. We have people on here poking fun at the Irish for their luck but hell we must be champions then as so many of our players are berated by our own fans such as Hutton, Fletcher (both), Bannan, Whittaker and lots more as being no good yet we have some great results of late with those players in the side. Now that is luck. Or is it just that those berated players aren't as bad as some like to portray them.

There is nothing wrong with selecting Championship players - it's still a decent level of football - Anya is far and away my favourite current Scotland player (going by the match reports it appears he plays better for Scotlahd than Watford - not something I'm going to complain about). However, Bannan is still vastly over-rated by some - La Liga - jings!
