Kraków Bars/ Restaurants

Kraków probably has one of the best bar scenes in Europe IMHO

For watching sports I am told the Irish Embassy Pub (or something like that) is the place to go in the city.

Bars and restaurants I visited were,

House of Beer Bar - just wall to wall of beers from around Europe.

Smak Ukrainski - Small backstreet Ukrainian bar near the castle that is great to lose a hour or three (as I found out when I lost an entire afternoon here....)

Near by was also Chmiel Beer Pub.... Underground pin ball machine pub that I really enjoyed.

At night head away from the old town and in to the old Jewish quarter (Kazimierz) as it is just bar after bar of local bars that you will not get ripped off in, and is very lively at night.

Omertà Pub was a good one I found here.

Also in this area go to Kuchnia u Doroty... It's like a Polish Milk Bar, but more tourist friendly and does amazing cheap food (if I could I would have went here every night)

There is a restaurant opposite the Irish Embassy called Kramy Dominikańskie which did great, cheap food.

If you like chocolate, then pay this place a visit: Krakowska Manufaktura Czekolady.

The Irish Embassy would be the place to go watch sports, but it does seem to attract British stagg parties. Food there is crap and expensive - avoid eating there.

@Wanderer: I thought Smak Ukrainski was terrible. I've not had as bad a meal as that for a while.

Group of us went to Restauracja Tradycyja on the main square on our first night (its a Italian resturant, but couple of nights each week they do a Polish folk music and dance night, which was brilliant (sight of Flure doing the birdie dance in Polish will live with me for the rest of my life :-)) ).

Also on the main square I found a cracking wee pub down a alley way oposite my hotel called Zakatek Cafe, which was nothing special, but you were paying a lot less than bars just a stones throw away.

Brilliant place Kraków. You'll love it!

Aqua e vino is a fantastic Italian restaurant just off the main square. Don't be put off by the entrance area, you go down stairs to a beautiful area with lovely exposed brick work. The food was utterly fantastic, having worked in an very good Italian, I'm usually extremely critical but found nothing to complain about here. So cheap in comparison to the standard.

Enjoy! I'd love to go back soon!

Krakow is a brilliant city. Eating out and drinking is amazing value.

I highly recommend here :

Me and the Mrs had a super meal here. 4 courses with a couple of bottles of wine and cherry vodkas all for less than £30 a head.
It's on a wee side street just off the main square.

Hi - yes. Auschwitz in the morning, salt mines in the afty. Have been down the salt mines at Berchtesgaden and enjoyed that.

Also coming back to Cape Town in February. Any jobs going?!

Though a number of companies advertise doing Aushwitz and Salt Mines in a single day, it's a looooooong day and probably will be exhausted by time you get to the Salt Mines.

Salt Mines are only 20-30 minutes drive from central Kraków and will not take much out of your day to do (you spent a bit of time just standing around waiting for your groups turn to go in).

Irish Mbassy is shut for refurbishment (or it was when I went there en route to Dublin).

House of Beer is worth a visit. Try the "Crack Off". Outstanding craft beer.

Chłopskie Jadło is recommended for food. Not a typical restaurant, but good cheap food.

100s of restaurants to choose from. Some can be very expensive, so check the price list if it looks classy.

You might want to avoid: http://www.efckrakow.pl/  (very close to House of Beer). Roosters is a sports bar with a twist ;)

Agree that Auschwitz and Salt Mines in one day will be shattering. It's a good 12 hour trip. Distances from Krakow aren't too bad though. Around an hour to Auschwitz-Birkenau and the same from there to Wieliczka.

Get a photographer pass in the Salt Mines. You'll definitely want it once you see the chapel.

You'll likely not get a beer all day. No bars in either place that I recall.

Nothing worse than a dry death camp...

Anyway, there's a tram shed in the Jewish quarter with a micro-brewery inside and lots of deckchairs. It's wonderful, and if you accidentally go on student night it's 60p a beer. No Wi-fi though.

Verbal communication? What a backwards country.
