sbcmfc
Rangers must have been involved - they existed then, right?! I'm assuming they just didn't make into Europe, unlike Waterschei, who did.......make it into Europe.........unlike Rangers, who didn't. They probably did, just not the CWC. The standard would've been pretty high I'd imagine, as most of these teams would've likely qualified for the European cup in its current format. Just out of interest, does anybody know what happened in those days if you won the cup and finished say 2nd in the league? Did you play CWC and UEFA place went to 3rd? (i.e did CWC take precedence?) Aye, the CWC was a more prestigious competition than the uefa cup. In fact some folk (mostly huns right enough ) would try to argue that the the CWP was harder to win than the EC. Their reasoning was that the EC and CWC were cup competitions and the CWC was full of Cup competition specialists.
aaid
Although maybe, seeing as I wasn't born then, I'm not allowed to comment? Just think Dave, I had the pleasure of seeing the greatest ever Aberdeen side in the flesh on many many occasions, including seeing them win the Scottish Cup. If anything the argument at the time was that the UEFA could be harder as it included a lot of teams that were on the way up and were leading their respective leagues at the time. The ECWC *was* generally speaking a weaker competition as a lot of European countries don't hold the domestic cup in comparatively high regard. The also rans started out with the Fairs Cities cup which kinda developed into the Uefa cup. At some point the Uefa cup overtook the CWC in prestige. I think that happened sometime between 1972 and 1983.

Well as a Hun, I think I would've been in a position to hear fellow Huns putting forward that argument, which I didn't, which makes me think that you're making that up. The Fairs Cup was a weird old competition though.
macy37
Loving this thread and the 'my flute is bigger than your flute' patter. It's almost as funny as claiming the super cup is a proper trophy.

Was just about to contact SSE to check for any gas ovens in the Glasgow area that had been on full power for the 5 last days.......

Although maybe, seeing as I wasn't born then, I'm not allowed to comment? Cheated out of it as I recall mate
littleboyblue
Quote not working for me but re sbcmfc #401, not only was the CWC so superior to the UEFA cup whereby the winners of the domestic cup would go in there when finishing in a UEFA spot, the domestic cup runners up would go in to the CWC when, let's say, the domestic cup winners also happened to be the CWC holders. You've probably guessed what I'm referring to. . 1983-84, we had Aberdeen and Rangers in the CWC, both falling to Porto.
jock strap
I've seen my team play in European finals twice. Fair enough it's the first leg and the second leg.

I still maintain that one of the Gothenburg goals came through the side netting.....(if that's the game you mean)
