The White Ceelo
Looking to lose a bit of puppy fat and decided to do a bit of hill walking one week then swimming the following all throughout winter as I don't fancy being a blood bank for the midges in summer. Started off on the hills with masts around Abington as they have reasonably good tracks to the top, then done Tinto in about 10 stops, sorry photo opportunities. Should be able to get up non stop now tho, as it is coming into winter what gear, boots etc should I get and any recommendations on good trails I should try. Cheers. Charlie Endell
Do Tinto from the south side (leave from Wiston Lodge) - much tougher and unlikely you'll meet another soul. Edited October 29, 2015 by Charlie Endell

Marky
Deecie is correct. His link to Walkhighlands is all you should need. Walk reports for every hill in Scotland of any significance and a really good forum for getting advice. Full of nice people being nice to each other. Not like this place :-)
Marky
Gators I prefer to use gaiters. When I used gators one of them bit my foot off.

Armchair Bob
Can you read a map? That and a torch are the main things you'll need. But if you're going up some of the higher hills in the Highlands they can be pretty serious in winter - there's a quote that there is no such thing as hillwalking in the Highlands in winter, it is mountaineering. Best way of dealing with the higher hills in winter is to join a club and learn how to use an ice axe, etc. It's got to be the best way of seeing the country though, a cracking winter day up a hill is heaven. Grim Jim
There are some great walks from Loch Trool. Different distances & heights to suit. Further east, there's the Grey Mare's Tail walk with the hills around Loch Skeen at the top. The NE side of the loch though is just about the boggiest place I've ever been. I've done the horseshoe walk taking in Hart Fell in winter. Quite long and fairly serious with deep snow in places. Lovely though!
