Pool Q
With all three of the major UK wide parties being so staunchly unionist, there is a clear logic behind most who voted Yes in the referendum now voting SNP at the Westminster elections, allowing for a proportion going to the Greens. In that context, and bearing in mind the response to the No vote across much of Scotland in the months after the vote, the polls don't seem surprising. In many ways the SNP's job is not so much in persuading folk to vote for them (rather than Labour, Tory or Lib Dem) as to persuade people simply to vote, remembering the extraordinary turn-out at the referendum. Increasingly the unionist parties are facing up to this so there will be a move for widespread tactical voting on their side, with calls to vote to keep the SNP out rather than for a specific party. Alex Massie, for example, argued for it in the Hootsmon on Monday, and the anti-Salmond campaign in Gordon may reflected across much of Scotland. What will worry the unionists I think is that the remarkable way the fear campaign succeeded in mobilising a No vote in the referendum can't really be replicated in a General Election where party rivalries remain predominant and there is less of a common enemy/bogey man factor when they are knocking seven bells out of each other in the rest of the UK. If the SNP keep their head and just work hard at getting people out to vote then there really could be a serious kicking for Labour on the way. As an aside, there could be quite a few folk elected as MPs long before they would have been expecting it. Doubtless most will rise to the challenge, and go on to do well, but having met a few out canvassing and at meetings, and heard a few on the radio, let's just say I think some might also find themselves on a very steep learning curve very soon. Auld_Reekie
Yep. I watched one SNP candidate on TV with my jaw on floor. Could barely string two sentences together.
Toepoke
Yep. I watched one SNP candidate on TV with my jaw on floor. Could barely string two sentences together. Could we see the opposite of what happened with Labour, where they sent an mainly inferior group to serve in Holyrood?...

scotlad
Could we see the opposite of what happened with Labour, where they sent an mainly inferior group to serve in Holyrood?... That's been my concern all along. Don't get me wrong, there are some very strong players standing for the SNP in this election; but there are also some complete dumplings. I'd take Brian Donohoe over her.

Scunnered
:lol:Steady on now! quite. I've been following the young Paisley girls campaign quite closely since the smear against her, and she's formidable... I then look at my options and see Patricia Gibson, given her disastrous 2010 campaign.... If Gibson unseats Katy Clark we're definitely in Yellow Rosette on a monkey territory... Scunnered
:lol:Steady on now! Actually on consideration... SNP's draconian whipping measures could very well be so they can say "It doesn't actually matter that your candidate is a moron, they're not required to think. What leadership says is all that matters".
Flora MaDonald
How'd you get into being a candidate? I was the SNP's pin-up boy when I was 18, but some cow told me I didn't have the temperament for it, and I resigned. Being older and wiser, I'm up for it now. mariokempes56
I've said before that the problem the SNP will have is the amount of ####wits that get elected and make a complete cockwomble if it. Wouldnt disagree but they will not be in a position of power so probably rarely if ever heard.
