  1. As everyone knows it is now 20 years since Scotland last appeared at the finals of a major competition and the sadomasochist in me thought it appropriate that we should 'mark the occasion' - hence the above-titled book that is now available from ebay at - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382429093184 It's an offbeat look at Scotland's two decades in the footballing wilderness as depicted in around 120 colour photographs of matches, stadia, street scenes and poster-art with accompanying narrative that tries to be humorous. This is not a commercial venture - I'll settle for breaking even with this self-funded, limited print-run of a therapeutic souvenir of near-misses, cock-ups and a chunk of our history that we won't forget - no matter how hard some of us may try! I hope you give it a go and that you enjoy it but please note that as Scotland WILL be appearing at the finals of Euro 2020 it will be a different type of sequel altogether that I will be slabbering on about in two years time... All the best Robert Marshall
  2. Seeing as we're not going to the World Cup finals in the summer and we don't have a manager and we might be 'homeless' in two years time, as a pick-me-up can I suggest you read the latest issue of our Scotland football magazine. Issue 8 includes articles on the UEFA Nations League, Football Memories Scotland, Hearts and Chelsea players who have done Scotland proud, the Under-21s, the Noughties decade and Tartan Army success at France 98 -show us your medal, plus the usual rants and raves etc. As usual, the mag can be obtained from ebay [link below] and as always thanks to all who have given this project their support over the years. Hopefully a special celebratory issue is only eighteen months away! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382368079460 All the best Robert Marshall
  3. Now I know commercial advertising on this site is not allowed but this is different, this is art -well sort of. Anyway over the past three years a number of TAMBERS have been good enough to support our Scotland Epistles fanzine project. You therefor may be interested to know that David Stuart and I have now cobbled together a book [an annual for grown-ups if you like] on the trials and tribulations associated with supporting our national football team. The key features of Scotland:Glory,Tears and Souvenirs are- [1] A selective history/alternative encyclopedia of Scotland’s national football team through two separate themes with extensive use of mostly colour images from our own varied collections of Scotland football memorabilia- [a] A [hopefully] humorous reminder of how Scotland, despite producing some great footballers over the decades, have surprisingly yet to win a major title [Kirin Cup notwithstanding] with reviews of all our World Cup and Euro Championship campaigns to date as well as a peek into the future; and An offbeat look at associated aspects of Scottish international football from individual players, managers and rival teams to football collectables and personal experiences. The book is available in most Waterstones bookshops plus online at Amazon and WHSmith with the latter two offering discounts. An ideal Christmas present perhaps and something to cheer us up as we await the draw for the European Nations League. A big thank you if you have already purchased this tome. Cheers Robert Marshall
  4. Hi folks Our four [hopefully six] dates with destiny are now looming large - so bring it on! Got to stop a ten in a row that will cover twenty years! Anyway, to help calm the pre-match nerves can I recommend issue number 7 of the Scotland Epistles football magazine which is now on sale on ebay. This issue includes a review of Scotland in the 1990s, a look at the claim that Scotland were once the dirtiest team in Europe, Scotland's first overseas tour, other representative matches [eg Scottish League and the EU Three], the Tartan Army 'brand', musical links to supporting Scotland [Warning:An image of Slade is featured], rants and ramblings plus an interview with commentating legend Archie McPherson -Incidentally, who did it for you Archie or Arthur? The ebay link is below and once again thank you for your continued support. Robert Marshall Editor/Daydreamer-in -Chief http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/382192363143?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
  5. Cheers fringo - your continued support is much appreciated. Thanks also to everyone else who has bought the mag. Back issues are still available at discount but better hurry as there are only a few thousand left.... Anyway, the Sunnylaw Jag and I look forward to selling a summer special edition outside the Kremlin in June 2018. Got to go now before they realise I'm missing.... Robert
  6. Hi folks Just to let you know that issue 6 of our football mag Scotland Epistles is now available from ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=381931347331#ht_500wt_1054 As well as being a half-decent Scotland souvenir it gives us something to read until the Lazarus-style comeback begins in March - yes I still believe. Issue 6 contains an interview with Pat Nevin, a review of the 1980s, north American tours, football and domestic politics, Scotland's worst strips, the fall of communism in Europe and lots more tosh besides. Enjoy and thanks again to everyone who continues to support this project. Robert Marshall
  7. Hi folks Just to let you know that issue 5 of our football mag Scotland Epistles is now available from ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll… As well as being an excellent Scotland souvenir [he says modestly] hopefully it will raise a laugh or two as we worry away the days waiting for the Malta game. It's still only £3.00 for 36 pages and articles include Tartan Army memories/tales [printable ones], the Seventies, an English viewpoint, Scotland collectibles, Scots in the NASL, Lithuania, British and Commonwealth [?] Championships, UEFA Youth Tournament, Football statues , Onomatology....and lots more tosh besides. Enjoy and thanks again to everyone who has supported this project over the past two years. Robert Marshall
  8. Issue 4 of the souvenir mag is now available from ebay or from sad bar stewards like myself outside Hampden on the night of the forthcoming game against Denmark. I think the undernoted link will take you to ebay but if you end up in a porn site by mistake then my profuse apologies. http://www.ebay.co.uk/…/SCOTLAND-EPISTLES-BUL…/381544398978… Anyway, hopefully it will help chase away the Euro blues with an eclectic collection of articles covering topics such as Scotland outclassing England, Heroes and Villains [eg Do you blame Miller or Hansen for the Malaga 82 cock-up? Have you forgiven Iwelumo yet?], The hat-trick nearlies between Stein and Fletcher, Book reviews, Logistical planning of overseas trips, The International Tartan Army, The North of Italy TA, The long suffering wife,How the Welsh see us [they liked Jock, hated Joe] and the Perils of peeking too soon. There's more and even the adverts look - talking of which a big thank you to The Tartan Specials and TAMB for their help in making possible this latest contribution to popular culture - so best buy it quickly before paper goes out of fashion altogether... Seriously, your support really is much appreciated - and I hope that line sounds more sincere than when the SFA say it. Thanks again Robert Marshall
  9. I think David Stuart's idea about football statues is spot-on but can I suggest that we think big on this one. Let's have some Stalinist-sized statues which straddle the approachways to Hampden - we could even have one of our old friend Ray Clemence that is large enough to allow supporters buses and coaches to drive between his legs. Bigger still, let's utilise the nearby Campsie Hills or Cathkin Braes to create Scottish Football's answer to Mount Rushmore. I would propose a monument to management in the shape of Ally MacLeod, Jock Stein, Andy Roxburgh and Craig Brown! OK then, by way of a more practical suggestion, why not adorn some of our tenement gable-ends with paintings of our Scotland football heroes. Indeed, as we gear up for being a host at Euro 2020 we could also include some continental footballers who have starred at Hampden over the years - eg Puskas, Beckenbauer and Zidane. Something similar was done last year to promote the various sports of the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow [and Edinburgh and Tayside]. Football and art can go together- the likes of Jinky Johnstone and Davie Cooper proved that.
  10. Just wanted to add my thanks to everyone who has bought a copy. Plus special thanks to those who have bought our 'Packet of Three' for £7. Satisfaction guaranteed. If you don't need them for the weekend then why not get them for the trip to Georgia. Thanks again. Robert
  11. I vote that we include the flawed Demi-God.Personally speaking Ally's term of office brought me more happiness and excitement than chocolate, sex, alcohol and the Nolan Sisters combined. Of course Argentina hurt but broken hearts mend - now if you'll excuse me I'm away to listen to my Jim Reeves CD. Oh yes, and whilst I'm off on one can we 'induct' Berti into Dante's Inferno - Eighth Circle. Hic!
  12. Now that we are approaching the home straight in the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign here's something to help calm the nerves - the third in a short series of unofficial, non-profit making souvenirs relating to our national team. The magazine is available from ebay using the link below. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCOTLAND-EPISTLES-BULLSHIT-THISTLES-3-TARTAN-ARMY-FANZINE-MAGAZINE-/381348031121?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT This issue includes a look at Scotland Managers since 1971, our relationship with England, comparisons with the forthcoming Rugby Union World Cup, Georgia 2007, the allocation of Scotland caps in the 1960s, pre-match pyrotechnics and world cup trading cards as well as a whole host of other Scotland-related tosh - which will appear amazing when you look back at it in 20 years time.....Paper and Print,Bloody Hell! Again, thanks to everyone who has supported this project in the past and hopefully you will find issue 3 to be interesting as well as humorous. Cheers for now. Robert Marshall.
  13. I think there are too many variables at play to be able to give an answer that I could defend to the hilt. However, if the question was -Who was my favourite manager? - then the answer would be Ally MacLeod. Under MacLeod the football was good but equally important, it was also fun! I bought into the Argentina hype big style and although the end result was painful I still look back fondly at those crazy days. It took until 2014 before a European side lifted the World Cup in Latin America but somehow ebullient Ally convinced much of Scotland that we would do the trick in 1978. He also convinced the Royal Mail who designed a celebratory stamp in readiness for us coming home with the trophy. I know my views are somewhat 'romantic' but sometimes you need a bit of escapism.
  14. Scotland 2 Portugal 1 -13 October 1971 -Euro Championship qualifier at Hampden that was also Tommy Docherty's first game in charge. I was 12 years old and my Uncle David took me to the game. On 23 October I was back at Hampden - with my Aunt Joyce -to see PTFC beat Celtic 4-1 in the League Cup Final. Ten days that shaped my life. My old man wasn't into football - he was a country and western music fan and in 1972 my Mum wouldn't let me go to the Scotland-Northern Ireland game as she was worried that the IRA might target Hampden! Nae wonder I've got issues.
  15. The gentle-giant may have been a tad over-enthusiastic that evening...
