Mark frae Crieff
My life isn't in more jeopardy driving 80mph than it is driving 70mph though. True but others might... also if the speed was increased others would then go that little bit over the limit...
Flora MaDonald
It's pure and simple shite driving by shite drivers.
Toepoke
The speed limits are outdated. Modern cars can safely go much faster than they could 30 years ago. As I said previously, folk who think going over 70mph is unsafe make me laugh. IIRC the 70mph limit (on motorways anyway) was brought in for fuel economy reasons... scoobydoo
My car has something like a 5 litre engine and the limit is 68mph. Disgraceful. I want to tank the arse out the thing but the police and the sneaky s are behind every lamppost.
Orraloon
It has always been like this nothing has changed. I think maybe dementia is setting in I think the word "always" is stretching it a bit. There was a time when there were no speed limits at all. Just because you can't remember it doesn't mean it isn't so. Edited October 29, 2014 by Orraloon
biffer
So we should probably just walk everywhere, as a crash at 30mph is more dangerous than a collision at walking pace. Basic physics in action No, but the speed limit is an arbitrary number. So using any kind of logic to argue for changing the level is pointless. Either you accept the need for a speed limit and that the actual limit is abitrary or you say no limits on any roads. Frankly I can't believe how people get wound up about this. There are far more important things to worry about.

saintlyscot
Drove the A9 Tue between Perth and Pitlochry. Anyone know what the purpose of the drilling in the road surface is. Got 2 or 3 mini riggs with temporary traffic lights. Caused a huge tailback on my way south.

redstevie007
Heard today from a copper that the speed cameras on the A9 are set at 82mph. Find that hard to believe to be honest given that the majority of it's a 60 limit.
saintlyscot
Oil find? Ha! Could have been given the thick mucky substance that was spewing to the surface. Maybe we are keeping it "Barnet exempt"!

Parklife
So speeding doesnt kill? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-29884641 Driving unsafely kills, obviously driving too fast for conditions/environments is dangerous. No one is arguing that. Driving 85mph on a motorway/dual carriageway on a clear day is not unsafe. No one is attempting to justify driving "three times the speed limit in a village" or driving 115mph. Lets stick to the arguments and points made on the thread, not make up our own arguments to argue against.

Orraloon
I wondered how they knew about the other 80 offences but I see they got the information off the tracking device. it's probably only a question of time before all cars are fitted with these and there will be no need for speed cameras. They could set it up so that drivers just get sent an automatic fine every time the break the speed limit. Five automatic fines and the device disables the car until the police come and cart the culprit off to jail. The wonders of modern technology. I think there's some insurers who will give cheaper premiums if you have a recording tracker fitted.
Flora MaDonald
I think there's some insurers who will give cheaper premiums if you have a recording tracker fitted. Aye, they do. It's also a standard requirement on Hi-spec motors. Nae tracker - nae insurance.
Orraloon
How would they know who was driving at the time? Camera in the steering wheel. This is the 21st century man. We have the technology. As an added bonus that would catch out folk using mobile phones or picking their nose which I think should be an offence whist driving.
