I don't blame Celtic for the actions of one of their players....although I'd like to see what the grounds for an appeal are, and I trust and hope that Celtic won't go into 'we'll stand by him no matter what because he's one of us' mode.

As I said, for a 7 game ban to be handed out the evidence must be pretty damning.

It also begs the question, if he can be found guilty of racial abuse by the SPFL, why aren't the police involved ? If you or me racially abused someone on the street we'd be committing a crime....what difference does it make if the same crime takes place on a football field ?

Any evidence should be passed to the police and the Procurator Fiscal should then decide if Tonev should be charged or not.

Tonev will quite happily sit out 7 games and be handsomely paid for it. I don't see that as much of a punishment for being a racist.

What was the evidence?

I have not really followed this since the allegation was made...

Well, the charge was that he racially abused Logan.

I presume that the evidence was that he did do it, and others heard him doing it.

I doubt if he would have been found guilty if the evidence wasn't pretty overwhelming.

Edit to say that my post sounds harsher than I meant it to. I haven't been following it either, but if it was just Tonev's word against Logan's then he wouldn't have been found guilty.

The hearing apparently lasted 5 hours so you've got to say it was carefully considered.

I'm surprised Celtic are appealing actually.

They seem to have forgotten the "Not Proven" verdict. I find it strange that they can hand out such a lengthy ban when it appears to be one player's word against another.

Where did you get that from ?

A 5 hour hearing took evidence from a number of people. They then found him guilty.

It wasn't 'one player's word against another'.

Nether of us have seen the evidence but Celtic will have and they are appealing so I doubt it is clear cut. If he's guilty I expect Celtic to kick him out the door.

They will look stupid kicking him out only if he loses an appeal.

They have backed him and said he didn't do it.

I don't think have left themselves with any wriggle room on this.

:blink::blink:

Bizarre logic.

He's guilty. He was just found guilty by people who heard all the evidence.

Does it only count if he's found guilty twice, or if Celtic say so ??

OK, I'll put it another way. If he's clearly guilty according to the evidence then I expected Celtic to kick him out the door. The fact that Celtic are backing him makes me think the evidence is not as clear cut as some think it is.

Or the fact that appeals never seem to result in increased punishment means it's almost silly not to appeal.

He's already been found 'clearly guilty according to the evidence'.

The fact that Celtic are 'backing him' is neither here nor there...they're hardly a neutral party.

Liverpool supported Suarez after his racism and assaults on players. Did that make him not guilty ?

Exactly my thinking, why bother appealing unless they think they can win it, it would be easy just to cancel his loan and get rid of him.

As pointed out, they'll appeal because there's absolutely nothing to lose.

Some magnificent double standards on show in this thread. People been ripping the SFA for months now with claims of corruption, greed and dishonesty. All of a sudden they have become bastions of truth and honour.

Go figure!!
