wanderer
It's a sh*hole that has one of the great cathedrals in the world, one the greatest opera houses in world, one greatest shopping areas, a fantastic castle, great cheap train access to lakes and mountains and once you are of the centre neighbourhoods where there is still real sense of community. All about opinions I suppose..... Only passed Lake Como on the train from Zurich to Milan, and will give you that.... but its a city I have no desire to return to, and if you walk only a street or two away from the Dumeo Square, you suddenly go from "fashion capital of the world" to "downtown Baghdad. fringo
Che Cheers guys Any particular restaurants you'd recommend? It's her birthday, so it'd be good to go somewhere relatively nice at least one night... I went here 12 years ago and thought it was pretty decent - 4 Gats http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d896759-Reviews-4_Gats-Barcelona_Catalonia.html

Heuch Moray
As already recommended any of Gaudi's buildings in Barcelona although not mentioned my first choice would be Casa Mila (La Pedrera).Get up on that roof! http://www.lapedrera.com/en/home Budapest: The House of Terror Museum located in the building of the former headquarters of Hungary's communist secret police. Sombre and chilling. http://www.terrorhaza.hu/museum

Toepoke
The Terror House is excellent (in as you say a sombre and chilling way), went there this summer for the first time. It opened back when I was working in Budapest, but at that time they charged triple admission for non-Hungarians so I never went on a point of principle. Now that i've been, im convinced that you're taking the pish. Sagrada Familia is the most incredible thing i've ever seen. The scale of it, the detail in every aspect, the colours cascading in through the stained glass windows, the vision and foresight to design such a thing - quite literally breathtaking in almost every way.
