I think you can count on one hand his individual errors that led to goals, not bad for someone who had 55 caps and played under Levein and Burley.

As someone said, the the majority of his Scotland career he played in teams than generally sat back and defended. He would have flourished in this Strachan side I think

Nah,my heart always sank when I saw his name in the squad. A liability and a terrible decision maker. I'll not miss him in the slightest but wish him well, could never fault his attitude or commitment.

To be honest I think that says more about you and your preconceptions about Caldwell than his actuall performances

Agreed. If he got fitter and back playing would happily see him back in the squad - We don't have a CB as good as he can be currently

Interestimng reading he's on 32, hoping he makes a comeback for Wigan but his international days are behind him me thinks.

Barring an injury crisis I don't think we will see Gary in a Scotland shirt again.

Mibbae, I'm a realist. He was always a liability, a bad decision maker.

He actually wasn't,he was a decent player till he was playing in negative teams that had no game plan and was made a scapegoat by some so called fans.

you say the same about Jordan Henderson which says it all really.

I was always immediately worried when there was a Caldwell on the team sheet. Mistakes by defenders are always costly and GC had his fair share of them. Cannae criticise his commitment etc but I will not miss him off the team sheet in the slightest.

This.

He had his moments of course and can be proud of his career.

i remember watching Hearts v Celtic on my tv in the setanta days, and celtic were 1-0 up.

I was just about to down the dregs of my beer and turn the tv off when Hearts had one last attack. Caldwell gave away a cheap pen in the dying moments and Hearts were able to equalise! Was well pleased! Thank fkk for Caldwell i said to my mate as i did a dance round the room.

This was about a year after he scored v France and we had not long beaten them in Paris.

In his very young days (2002) he also brought down Ricardo Fuller in the last few mins at Easter road for Hearts to win 2-1 from the resulting penalty. Always great to see Caldwell

Late 2009 also Hearts v celtic, Celtic a goal up and cruising in the 1st half. Caldwell gets himself sent off and gives away a penalty for 1-1. The extra man helps hearts get a 2-1 win that day in a game they looked to be struggling in at 11 v 11. Happy days again and thanks to Caldwell.

Also loved his goal mind!
