England currently 43/3 :(

At lunch they are 88 for 3. They'd have wanted to be around 100 for 1 at lunch but considering they were 44 for 3 then had Root dropped then 88 for 3 could have been a lot worse. The road map to recovery for them will be to get to tea no worse than 175 for 5 and close around 250 for 8.

Road map to recovery?

Just out of curiosity for the cricket following guys on here. Is there the same ABE attitude as there is in other sports? Or do you get behind England & Wales as there is no real Scottish test match alternative?

I seem to remember as a kid wanting Liverpool to win the EC, then Forest, Villa etc. Most recently Man Utd in 1999.

Don't know why but maybe some of these teams had Scots playing.

Also supported all Scottish teams outwith my own in Europe (and still do).

For some reason I'd prefer England to win the Ashes but not too bothered really.

Maybe it's a familiarity with players, teams closer to home in all the above ?

In a similar way that's possibly why in the Ryder Cup we still want the European team to beat the USA even when there's no Scots in it also?

I get supporting English teams, I get supporting Europe in the golf, also the Lions in the rugby (even if the first Scot to appear didn't appear until the last 10 minutes of the last test), but I genuinely have no support for England in the cricket. TBH that's probably because I don't follow the cricket lore than anything.

The latter. Australia are equivalent to England in football as in they think they are the absolute bees knees so it is always nice when they get their come uppance. Test cricket is (to me) so much better than ODE or Twenty-20 as it is always a battle for supremacy where tactics play a big part in getting batsmen out whereas in limited overs stuff some rank bowling can get wickets as batsmen tend to swing their bat much more.

When I first started going to Tests, Scotland were effectively a minor county, and England represented the UK. So I supported them more often than not. Scotland are now an associate nation and play in world Cups for one day and T20 cricket, so it's different. Generally I want to see good cricket and font care that much who wins

I don't really have the ABE attitude in football, more couldn't give a toss about them.

I support England in cricket (unless they are playing Scotland). My reasoning is as biffer says above, if you are Scottish & good enough to play test match cricket then you always played for England historically - I think it may have changed recently due to residency rules though.

Could never support England at anything, though I have lived in England for 35 years or so. Imagine what it would like if they win " the ashes " back? They would get far more recognition for winning this than say, Wales winning rugby World Cup. Team of the year and sports personality guaranteed

Used to want England to win (generally) right up to the point that the game became 'Sky-ified' and re-invented itself as football, with all the Ingerlund-lads-on-tour culture that accompanies it.

The government jumping on board in 2005 and handing out MBE's left right and centre didn't help.

Now (generally) I want them to fall flat on their faces.....although, like others, my over-riding feeling is simply that I enjoy the game and appreciate when the best team wins. Doesn't matter all that much to me one way or another if it's England or not.

As for this test, a pretty turgid wicket, winning the toss and poor Aussie bowling put England in the driving seat from the off.

Weather forecast isn't brilliant for Saturday and Sunday though. If the Aussies can get another 150 runs on the board tomorrow the draw is likely.

Pretty hopeless stuff from the Aussies....they seem to be handing this game to England rather than England doing anything spectacular to win it.

England hot favourites now...only a ridiculous collapse from them, or the weather, will save Australia.
