League Cup Second Round

The best cup tie i ever attended was Accies v Hearts on 3rd March 1986

The weather had been honking and there were lots of postponements due to the snow

Think it had been called of twice before the Accies famous groundskeeping men got it on for a cold Monday night

There was a capacity crowd inside the old Douglas Park - official attendence for the game was 10,000 but im sure there was more.

Just try and imagine what a crowd of 10,000 was like at the old Douglas Park (on a monday night) - it was absolutely rocking

You couldnt get moving in either the home or away ends of the shed

The game kicked off and John Wurzel McNaught (who would later go to Chelsea and sadly die at an early age) flew up the right wing, set John Brogan free in the box and he blasted home

The place went cuckoo - never seen anything like it at Accies before or since

2 minutes later John Robertson equalised for Hearts and similarly their end went bananas - it was totally electric

Think Gary Mackay got the winner with about 20 minutes left and Accies couldnt pull it back

That was when Hearts were at their peak - Henry Smith, Kidd, Levein, Jardine, Berry, Kenny Black, Brian Whittaker, Colquhoun, Sandy Clark, Mackay and Robertson

Fondly remembered at Firhill too for his spell with the Jags in 87-88.

I'm talking about a cup-tie. I've been at plenty at East End back in the days where the gate was over 10K. Might be more than 20 years ago though,,,, :wink2:

I remember being at cup games at Bayview against Hibs and Hearts where the old ground was packed to the rafters. Where did awbody go ? .

Support Aberdeen? ;)

One of the best cup ties I've seen was in the League Cup (Skol Cup) at Brockville.

I was staying in Falkirk (had a summer job at Grangemouth) and went along as a neutral to see them playing Thistle. The atmosphere in the shed was mental, Chic Charnley was indulging in constant banter with the home fans.

Jim Duffy had recently walked out on the Falkirk managers job and was back playing for Thistle. He was getting absolute pelters the whole night but ended up scoring the winning penalty in the shoot out. The ultimate GIRUY!

Brockville was an utter coup, but I loved going there!

We lived in Cumbernauld when I was a kid, so that was a pretty local away game.

Always remember being there for a midweek game when the floodlights went out. There were 4 of us there, 7 of us at the rematch.

Also remember a game around 1989 where we lost 2-0 and the chants of "McLean must go" were ringing out from the 'well fans. Just as well nobody was listening! My dad said that day he wouldn't be back.

one of the best i have been at even though we lost was Hearts at Dundee in around 1995.

Dundee quickly went 2-0 up but hearts pulled it back to 2-2 through McPherson and Colquhoun, Dundee then went 3-2 up straight after only for Alan Lawrence to equalise in the last minute to take it to extra time.

Wieghorst scored a belter to make it 4-3 then Robbo scored to force penalties in the second period of extra time.

Loads of the older hearts players bottled out of taking pens so it was left to Henry Smith to keep hearts in the tournament, he failed miserable and i think they were still looking for the ball in Tannadice the next day :-))

Even though we got beat you came away thinking you had got cracking value for money.

5,200 at that match. Same season 9,552 at Firhill and 10,000 at Brockville in the Scottish Cup 3rd round. Changed days - would be doing well to get 2,500 for the same matches now. Edited by one t in scotland

Rangers v St Johnstone chosen for live BBC coverage. Social media expresses its annoyance immediately thereafter!

Let's be honest, it's a boringly shit and predictable choice.

St Johnstone will crap their own ersehole out in front of a disinterested crowd of around 18K.

The imaginative choice would be the most interesting tie of the round, Hibs v Aberdeen. But we can never accuse the BBC of being imaginative when it comes to Scottish football.

I have to agree here. We were disgraceful the last time. Although the game before that we played at Ibrox I only seem to remember one team crapping it and it wasn't Saints or Rangers....

:wink2:

I don't think we crapped it. We actually played quite well and had loads of chances...we were simply beaten by a Saints team that were better in the 2nd half and wanted it more.

Glad you won the cup that year... :ok:

I can,the minute BBC and Rangers kissed and made up it was on the cards. The TV companies are always keen to throw money at two biggest and richest clubs in Scotland

On paper aye Hibs/ Aberdeen would have probably been most a much better option

If I recall correctly, the two clubs shown on the TV get no extra cash just because their game is broadcast.

Indeed, Rangers will lose money due to reduced attendance with the game being on TV so your argument is flawed.

For league games i think you're correct. I think you do get a payment for cup games though.

as others said you are wrong. This is just another example of the BBC bowing down to the rangers. I can't say I am surprised at anything that lot do after the referendum disgrace
