England Squad - Do We Have Anything To Fear?

Hart, Clyne, Cahill, Jagielka, Gibbs, Wilshere, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck, Smalling, Foster, Chambers, Barkley, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Downing, Berahino, Lambert, Forster

Long gone are the golden generation of Beckham, Scholes, Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Cole etc.

Rooney is the only World class player, but rarely shows it. Sterling has the potential to go to the top, but he's not quite there yet. A fit Walcott is dangerous, but he's just back from a long term injury.

Should we be afraid of this group of players?

In as much as they can still select from the top four or five teams in the Prem, yes. Can you imagine an England squad drawn from the bottom end of the table plus the Championship?

True, but, being English, means they are massively overrated. Plus they have the homegrown player rule. So there will always be English men playing in the top 6.

Scottish players get in there based on ability, not nationality.

Does anyone really rate the likes of Smalling, Lallana, Lambert, et al, just because they play for big teams?

I honestly think this is the last time we will look at their team and be afraid. The teams will start to balance out over the next 2-3 years, in terms of quality.

We also have 3-4 players that should be playing at a higher level (Anya, Maloney, Marshall, Hanley). Robertson's potential is unlimited. Plus the likes of the 2 Fletchers and Naismith will be highly rated in England.

To me where a player plays is totally irrelevant.

How many Scotland players playing for big clubs in England or abroad have failed to shine for us? I can think of lots and conversely some that have played largely lower league football have excelled for us such as Graham Alexander and Anya, Hanley and Martin presently.

The same is the case for England. A more important factor is how the squad is used by the manager and the commitment shown by the players - on that front I would certainly say we have the edge.

Rooney isn't world class, good player a few years ago, but he's lost it a bit.

I'm more fearful of the likes of Sterling and Oxlade-Chamberlain on the whole.

World class ability, lower league class consistency.

He generally has a 5 game spell where he looks excellent, followed by 10 being average.

Sterling is the only 1 I would like to be injured for this game. No one else worries me all that much.

This game is ours for the taking.

I reckon a loss tonight will be self-inflicted, rather than England's brilliance.

You're at it - Imagine if English fans rated our players, average championship players probably going to start!

Still, we have a good chance and I think it'll be a close one...

The question was should we fear them. I think only Lallana, Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck and Barkley are the only players that would cause us major problems if they have a very good game.

Very few of our players on paper individually would cause them problems.

However, it's a team game - we tend to play better as a team than England do. Lets hope that's true tonight.

Exactly. We would bite anyones hand off who offered us a striker like Welbeck or a Centre half like Jagielka and these are far from their top players.

But we do play better as a team and we have a good chance, draw is on the cards I reckon!

Agree with all, except Lallana. Extremely overrated. Looks good on highlights. Watch him for 90mins and you'll see how average he really is.

Yes, England would probably rate or players in the same way. But that is more from ignorance than anything else.

They will be well aware of Naismith's form. I know Morrison and D.Fletcher are highly regarded down south as well. As is Marshall.

Brown and Mulgrew won't be rated, but they are Champions league players

I do not fear their central midfielders, I expect Brown & Mulgrew to dominate them. Our forward four will cause their full backs and centre halfs plenty problems. However, I fear Rooney, Wellbeck & Lallana will cause our centre halfs & Whittaker (if he starts) a lot of problems simply because of their pace. Robertson will cope just fine and pose them questions when going forward. Taking all that into account there's nothing more to fear than when we played Ireland & Poland, Germany had much more to fear but we competed with them. All in all, I would say 2-2 or maybe reverse last years scoreline ;)

As I said before, the goals we lose will probably be down to deficiencies or mistakes, rather than England's excellence in attack. Barring a world class performance from Rooney, which is unlikely.

We nearly caught them cold last year. We gave them a right good fright before they managed to pull a couple of goals back.

Unfortunately, they will know better than to take us lightly this time. However, England arguably had a better team back then and we DEFINITELY have a better team now.

A draw is the minimum I would settle for.
