Strikers?

I agree with his judgement on Rhodes. He didn't impress me when playing for Scotland.

I completely disgree with his view on Martin. He referenced Derby's 5-0 win last weekend in which he didn't score (Russell scored 2). Strachan intimated that Martin was involved in everything, which was utterly false. As Derby's main striker, when they broke up the field at pace, if he wasn't already up there, he didn't make any attempt to get involved.

It's amazing how unimpressed I was compared to Strachan's view. (I'm not convinced he watched that game) Sometimes managers just have bizarre favourites. It's frustrating for fans of all teams

Well whatever the case perhaps the fact he was hooked at half-time is an indication that Strachan didn't like what he saw and will perhaps elevate others above him in the pecking order such as May and Russell.

Based on his squad selection and evolving first 11, I don't think Strachan will stick to favourites.

I'm sure I counted recently that he'd called up over 50 players since he became manager. That shows that he is very open minded to change.

I think Russell if given a chance could play up front, unfortunately for him he is played as more of a winger for derby to allow MArtin to play up top. Due to his adaptability he is going to continue to have this issue unless he manages to dislodge Martin at derby.

The last two years at united once Goodwille had left he played up top and got 15 in 43 and 20 in 38 so he can and does score goals.

Still a great option to have in the squad and hope to see him included in the future squads. Much more capable player than the likes of Burke who in my oppinion has nothing to offer

Chris Martin - The problem for me was he looked lazy next to Naismith. Naismith was chasing and harrying and trying to pressure all the time, where as Martin was mostly jogging around, waiting for England's play to break down. Derby are comfortably the best team in the league, so maybe he doesn't appreciate that he's got to work harder when in a Scotland shirt. You'd have thought that Friday was a good lesson in that regard tho.

Stevie May - I like him, I'm not sure he's quite there yet. but he's got good potential and looks like he has the right attitude. I'd much rather see him in the squad than Griffiths for example.

Rhodes - Some seem to think he's still scoring a goal a game.. he's not. he's firmly off the boil at the moment, even tho his club's doing well. He's score a massive 1 in his last 9 appearances. He's not in the squad purely on merit. If he starts scoring a lot again he's got every chance of forcing his way into the squad against Gibraltar.

Watt - I think the calls for him to play are just pure fanboyism. He's started 2 games this season for liege, out of 19. and he's scored just 2 goals in 13 appearances. He's not a starting player and he's not scoring goals. When he is, great, get him in. Right now he's not.

Russell - Looked great going forwards when he came on. Didn't follow his runner which may have prevented the 3rd goal for England tho. Would definitely like to see him start on the left vs Gibraltar, shifting Anya to the right so he can cross on his natural foot.

Naismith - Can play the targetman up top. He did it a few times during the last campaign to good effect. Sure it's not his best positon, but he's good at it and he's our best option if Fletcher is injured.

If Feltcher's out, I'd like to see a forward 4 of:

------------Naismith

Russell - Maloney - Anya

On a brighter note, and is an attacking midfielder, is that surely Robert Snodgrass has a good chance of being fit in time for Gibraltar?

Snodgrass will be struggling to make it back before the end of this season.

He said: “The diagnosis has been that this season is gone. If I play any part, it will be a bonus."

Snodgrass said: “Progress is slow and I’ll be out longer than six months but we have excellent facilities and physios at Hull and it’s all about how I react to the rehab."

Did he? I thought Russell did well but I don't think May did much to impress.

Well in terms of movement he was miles better, Martin was incredibly static, not what is required at all, May at least made a few runs.

Russell looked really sharp, I'd like to see him in the squad from now on.

There is a misconception that we don't get crosses in. Maybe in the past aye, but not now - especially with Robertson and Anya hitting in out-swingers from the left and Maloney and Mulgrew hitting in in and out-swingers from the other side, especially free kicks.

I think that Rhodes would have had at least two against Ireland.

No way he would have missed all of the three great chances we had http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMEWpyv-MkE - Mulgrew's header from Maloney's cross, Fletcher's complete air kick in front of goal off Maloney's nice cross in the first half and Martin's miss from Naismith's cross in second half, when he went near post when the far post was wide open.

JR eats these type of chances for breakfast and as neither Fletcher nor Martin were involved in the build up for their own chances, so therefore a requirement for the striker to be involved in link up play was not necessarily true, which is most folk's seemingly main complaint about Rhodes and would be true if we weren't playing in as many good crosses as we currently are..

Add in the fair few other cut backs and rebounds off the keepers in both the Georgia and Ireland games that fell into open space with players standing watching, stock still on their heels and showing zero anticipation; add some headers that sailed over or wide from others (and neither Fletcher nor Martin were able to get positioned to get on the end of them).

After watching Rhodes against Australia (ok a data set of only one, but the YouTube compilation of his goals shows his natural finishing ability and knack of being in the right place and the right time and his U21 goal scoring record), I am not buying that he could not play and score goals in our current formation..

And as we cannot seem to keep a clean sheet for more than 30% of games, we need to be scoring goals, and more than we currently do. We also need someone that the opposition fear and make them use up defending resources on that dealing with that fear to leave room for others (Naisy, Anya and Maloney). To be fair, Fletcher is doing this part well, but he should be scoring those opportunities that he's missing currently as well.

As others have said, JR and Fletcher vs Gib could see something akin to Boyd, Faddy and Miller's demolition of the Faroes a few years ago. (Actually I just watched that on YouTube and that keeper must have been on a bung!! :-))http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7F5nFqrtzI. )

WGS needs to get JR back in the squad, if not the team.

In terms of heading the ball, few in Britain are better than Fletcher. He just isn't converting them right now. So the crossing argument doesn't really make any sense. Though you are correct that the ball into feet chances we missed might have been scored by Rhodes.

But Fletcher is very heavily involved in build up, where as Rhodes is just there to provide the finish. Playing Rhodes would effectively reduce the amount of attackers we have.

I would say the biggest problem we have is players getting into the box. I want to see more runs by our CMs and full backs, like Mulgrew's effort or Robertson's England goal.

Jordan Rhodes has just scored his sixth of the season for Blackburn today - a goal every 237 minutes so far this season.

What's Steven Fletchers goals to minutes record? Yet nobody would ever say he shouldn't be in the squad.

Clearly Rhodes is better than Chris Martin - he needs to be in the next squad

187 this season for Fletcher. For comparison - 208 for Naismith (League only).

I wouldn't doubt that Fletcher shouldn't be in the squad. One of very few strikers playing in the top tier in England. A different type of player to the rest of them as well.

Poor analogy though as Fletcher is in the top flight whereas Rhodes has never played in the top flight. Put it this way Rhodes is a totally different type of player to Fletcher who is more than just a goalscorer. He is a link-up man as could be seen by his delightful through ball for Anya in Dortmund. I would include Rhodes in the next squad though in place of Martin as it is pretty clear to most that the Derby striker is just not cut out for us.
