  1. Not sure Cooper or Dykes deserve a start. Bit harsh on Shankland
  2. I'm curious to hear from people that have actually watched full games of Ferguson in Italy. I don't doubt the hype, but I've yet to see anything in a Scotland shirt that would convince me he should start ahead of McTominay, McGinn, Christie or Gilmour. I'm happy for Armstrong to be our supersub as he pretty much always leaves an impression. I can't think of much of anything Ferguson has done. Obviously there is only so much he can demonstrate from the bench.
  3. I can see why Clarke tried him up next to Shankland, as he would do all the running and allow Shankland to just focus on doing what he does best. I'm not against that in theory, but I think the benefit doesn't outweight the negative. Which is that McTominay and/or McGinn play slightly deeper. I know both them missed chances as well, but I'd rather they got a few more shots on goal than Christie. Who seems to be completely transformed into a non-scoring midfielder.
  4. I hope Clarke realises just how well the first 11 played against the Dutch. I personally would start with the exact same 11 and just try to keep them on the pitch together a little bit longer. The one tweak I'd make is to push Christie further back and put McTominay or McGinn closer to Shankland.
  5. I actually think Clarke will have learned he got it right, on the most part. Obviously Hickey would normally be in for Patterson. And the centre backs are still a bit of a mystery. Other than that, I think it was spot on. I hope Clarke sees it that way and doesn't change too much against Northern Ireland.
  6. Agree with most of this. Though you've possibly understated Christie's performance. He was 2nd only to Gilmour last night. I'd personally go with the exact same team against Northern Ireland, except I'd swap Christie and McTominay around. And try our very best to leave those 11 on the park for as long as possible.
  7. This is exactly it. Bear in mind we hit the woodwork twice before all those subs. The game was there for the taking. Clarke will have learned that we can't afford to take off 2 of our best players. Yes, I'm now officially putting Gilmour in the same bracket as Tierney, Robbo, McTominay and McGinn. He was outrageously good last night and will only get better.
  8. The "surprise" Clarke referred to pre-match was obviously the Christie/Shankland partnership. I can see the logic. Christie's movement and tenacity takes the pressure off Shankland and allows him to focus on what he does best. Against weaker opposition it'll probably work. It did mean McTominay and McGinn were marginally deeper tonight, though. Which is possibly not a wise sacrifice, considering they are our most clinical players at the moment.
  9. That was the Gauld, GMS, Souttar, Armstrong, Rankin, Robertson, Paton team. I'm sure there were a few others as well. Edit: Mark Wilson as well.
  10. Good point. I'd say Ronny Deila should get a fair amount of credit for signing most of them. But Rodgers didn't shirk at playing most of them. I can't see him going out of his way to re-stock the Scots at Celtic this time round. Oooh good shout. They had a lot of players with tons of potential who were being touted for bigger things. McGinn obviously being the most successful. Henderson, Boyle and Cummings haven't done too bad for themselves either.
  11. There were murmurings from some Motherwell fans that Spittal should be getting a look in. Not very realistic, but that shows you how well he's been doing if some folk are bold enough to suggest him. Who was the last team to actually have a strong Scottish contingent? (And be semi-successful). The Andy Robertson Dundee Utd team? Can't think of any since then.
  12. I don't think I've ever seen Barron have a bad game. In fact, he's always in the top 3 or 4 on the pitch. Granted, I haven't seen many Aberdeen games this year. However, I don't think it's out of the realms of possibility that it'll be a Barron-Gilmour defensive midfield a few years from now. We're actually fairly well covered at CB at the moment. Even with a couple of injuries, it's not panic stations. So the likes of King and Morrison can just develop nice and slowly in the background with no immediate pressure to step up. Doak is the only one I thought had an outside chance of making the Euros. But his time will come. The nations league might be a better environment for him to be integrated.
  13. I was just playing devil's advocate a wee bit. I personally would be happy to see Souttar and Porteous starting as well. Hendry has more international experience than Souttar, so he may just edge it. Which I'd be fine with. Could this be Cooper's final camp with us? It's going to be increasingly difficult to justify his inclusion.
  14. I wasn't saying I necessarily disagree with you, just that "the defence picks itself" was a bit off. I'm a big fan of Souttar, Hendry and McKenna. All 3 were breaking through and making waves around the same time. I remember debating at the time who was most likely to go on to become a regular Scotland internationalist. Turns out all of them! I don't know about the rest of the people on here, but I garner so much joy when you see a young player, that you've followed for a while, go on to fulfill their potential. So I have a huge soft spot for the aforementioned. Same goes for Fraser, Hickey and Patterson.
