U21 Squad

he hasn't been in it for as long as a i can remember and will be nowhere near the first team squad

Ahhh right. Just going through the team to see if there was any obvious players missing and he was the only one I can think of (naturally Jack Harper is still injured and it's to be waited to see if he will be involved in any Scotland set up....)

Some good attacking players and at full back, no to sure about how good our centre backs and goalkeepers are mind you.

Fulton seems to be very highly rated by Liverpool and was getting good reports for their youth team last season (IIRC he was their U19 teams 1st choice keeper at 16 or something when he was moved up a level or two).... Henley has been involved in the Scotland set up for a good number of years now, and was surprising when Reading released him in the summer.

Hendrie has been on the fringes of the West Ham first team this season (sure he played in their European games last month).....McFadzean I think has just broken into the Sheffield United 1st team, but not yet cemented a starting place.....Hyam seems to be another product of Readings conveyor belt of players eligible for Scotland (there has been something like 6 or 7 Reading players involved at various youth levels)...Love also comes with a good reputation as one for the future.

If Fulton is so highly rated by them, then why did Liverpool sign Danny Ward to a new long term contract back in June and sign Adam Bogdan as their new back up goalie ?

Stephen Hendrie hasn't made a single appearance for West Ham yet outside of friendly games. Bilic clearly does not rate him at all, after all, he didn't even sign him.

Donald Love is nearly 21 years old and still hasn't made a single appearance for United or even had a loan spell yet. In fact he's still to make his professional debut. "Highly rated" is pushing it a bit, I think it's safe to say he won't be taking Smalling or Blind's places in the United first team anytime soon.

Callum McFadzean only got games because of an injury crisis at Sheffield Utd. He's been on the bench for a long while now.

None of the Reading players seem to be making an impact at their club. Cardwell is out on loan to the giants of Woking FC and McLennan was released.

You do know these are all kids? We are not talking about first squad call up's by Strachan?

Danny Ward is a couple of years older than Fulton, so always going to be ahead of him (with Ward on loan at Aberdeen it gives Fulton a bigger chance in Liverpool reserves.... There was a article a while back and a coach at Liverpool said Fulton was one of the best goalkeeping prospects he had seen at Liverpool in a long time).

True Hendrie was not a Bilic signing (but he is only 5 minutes through the door....), so is going to need to work hard to get anywhere there, but still got time on his side so hopefully make it.

Donald Love will probably not make it at Man United, but no shame in that, again just need to wait and see (sure it was Darren Fletcher who was raving about him).

Same logic could be used to Guald for them......,

All the reading players are still in their teens, so long time before they are talked about as possible first team players.....

If I had £1 for every time since I joined this forum that you've talked up some young Scot on the rolls of a dead end provincial English club as being "highly rated" or "not far off the first team" and who are now playing English National League or Scottish League 1 football - I could buy myself a wet and wild night with Jennifer Lawrence.

Well ain't you a little ray of sunshine!

:-)):ok:

Yip, being regularly in contact with the spirits of P.G.Wodehouse, Stan Laurel and Groucho Marx, rubs right off on me. Cheery so I am.

Big fan of the Jags is Groucho.

That's nice but I remember Robbie Keane saying in the Celtic View over five years ago that he thought two young forwards he regularly trained with called James Keatings and Greig Spence would be assets to Celtic and Scotland by now .............

This is what I'm getting at here. Some people are getting a wee bit carried away with our young players ability, which with one or two exceptions, isn't really all that promising. The bitter pill of reality is a tough one to take.

.

Like?..... If there is so many.

Most the ones I predict who would make it have (Grant Hanley) with probably Tom Cairney (who should be involved....) and Jordan Archer (who could still be one day...)

At the moment I have high hopes for Alex Davy (but like Love will have to go elsewhere...) , Jack Harper (who has moved on to progress), Kyle Cameron and Ross McCrorie (would like his brother to make it as well, but got my doubts).

Don't shoot the messenger!

Sorry mate, it wasn't really aimed at you.

Was rather at those who get all excited just because a Scot scored a few for the youth team of an English League 1 club, then five years from now they are on the bench at Dunfermline reserves.

I've just always thought that type of mentality is naive and a little pathetic really.

Football is about hope though. When cold reality sets in, there's not much point.

So here's my wishful thinking... Looking at the current full squad we have some good pros but that's about it. In the u21s we have potentially 5 or 6 that could be significantly better - and I'm talking about players originating from Scottiish football - no idea about the England-based youth players. I've been saying that for 30 years but confidence is sky high...

The difference is all the big countries have these 28 year olds etc playing first team football or at least in the first team squads at their teams and very often playing for their international team too.

You're quite right. The drop off rate from highly rated young players to actual proper international players is something like 10 to 1. That's why small countries like Scotland don't do as well as big countries. The players are not really any better, there's just more of them. Edited by adamntg

Rather surprised Telfer keeps getting picked. Can't get game in poor United team and behind Fraser and Spittal who don't get look in. Also Souttar not been great this season although maybe might improve now that McNamara gone

Fraser is the next Armstrong. One fit, but apart from that. He's the pick of the bunch for me. Spittal and Souttar also have great potential. Yet to see it from Telfer.
