Charlie Endell
Anyone have any tips if you've not had a car for four years but had nine years no claims prior to that? Most insurers will accept proof of bonus up to one year after expiry - some will accept up to two years after expiry, but I'm afraid you're goosed after four years. Thanks naeidea.com Definitely time to shop around Most insurers will try and get you off their books after a period of time It's the way they work Was with Direct Line for nearly 10 years & was quoted almost double for renewal than i was with Churchill to go with them Churchill and Direct Line are both part of RBS

Armchair Bob
Mario - wouldn't be surprised if it is cheaper for you to insure the car, even if you never drive it, then put your lad on your insurance. Though I'd check the small print first in case they don't like that arrangement.

Huddersfield
My daughter insured her first car a year or so back & got a reduction of around £200 for adding me to her insurance. It made no difference adding my wife who has been accident free for donkey's years so I can only assume that what made the difference was adding someone who holds a policy & has a few years no claims. It's a shame if you don't drive but maybe if she can add someone that does & has a good record it might help. Also definitely as other have said shop around for companies that specialise in young drivers (Admiral I think are one of them).

mariokempes56
It seems a crazy system. The Aviva quote was approx £1000 but the various websites are showing £450 upwards ? Seems too good to be true. goosed.com
Angus_Young
It seems a crazy system. The Aviva quote was approx £1000 but the various websites are showing £450 upwards ? Seems too good to be true. goosed.com It won't be mate. Quite a common thing for companies to be hundreds of pounds apart. Certain insurance companies will steer clear of a certain type of driver. The bigger companies can afford to turn young people away. Plenty insurance companies out there that need to take what they can get. That's why it always pays to shop around. Where are you saying the car is parked at night btw?

Kirk
It seems a crazy system. The Aviva quote was approx £1000 but the various websites are showing £450 upwards ? Seems too good to be true. goosed.com Nah the lower ones should be fine just read through everything. And as others have said if there is someone you know who holds a policy and wouldn't mind being a named driver too it might bring it down. When my dad went to add me to his new car his current insurer wanted to add £500. I'm 26 with a clean licence. He shopped around and managed to get the 3 of us on both cars for £550 instead of about £700 on his and £300 on the other car. Insurers will try and get away with high quotes because some people will just pay it without questionimg.
the doomed
Add a second driver, who is female, 30+ with no convictions or claims. Often takes a good bit off it as spreading the risk. Mother, sister or close relative ideally
