Rich NATA
Just wondering if any of you got to visit the city of Gori during the previous jaunt to Georgia (?) The birthplace of Stalin, he's the local boy done good to the people of Gori Yes, I know... He was a brutal dictator, but he was the only person of any note to come out of Gori. The house he was born in has been preserved and next to it there is the Stalin Museum. 'Excellent, but biased' is what my guide book says; it seemingly avoids any mention of purge's, gulag's or the Ukrainian famine. The people of Gori might respect Stalin, but that doesn't stretch across Georgia as a whole. There was a huge statue of Comrade Stalin stood in the city square until 2010... The locals then woke up to find the Georgian Government had removed the statue overnight. There is talk of said statue going to the Museum at some point. Elsewhere is Gori there is a War Museum concentrating on WW2 but with a section on Georgia's recent feud with Russia. I can't honestly say I'm interested in fortresses, but there is one in Gori which even I think is impressive. I've read 3 different estimates of how far Gori is from Tbilisi (30km, 47km and 85km). I'm not sure which it is, but I wondered if any of you had been there last time (?) I'm toying with the idea of going and spending a night or two. Failing that, I might look at arranging some sort of TA daytrip if other's are interested (although I'd like to split that responsibility with other's cause I'm not the most reliable person the morning after the night before). Brassrubber
Was on that trip last time well worth it included a trip to a stoneage cave town and a fantastic meal near south ossetia border I think.Six weeks after our visit the russkies invaded and there were dead bodies in Gori main square. When we arrived at stalins house the bedroom was taped off and according to the guide this was because some kilts had visited earlier that day and lay on his bed for photae opportunity ! HIS PERSONAL TRAIN CARRIAGE IS ALSO IN GORI

kayjay
Yes a good day out was had by all.Off work for 2 weeks after that trip with a dose of the Skitters. Remember it well. That was the worst Skitters I have ever had in my life. Don't know why. Didn't eat or drink anything different to the rest of my mates who were fine. Discovered through TAMB others were the same. Tartan Docs
Cracking trip the last time [with the scariest bus journey ever thrown in for good measure]
PaulfiliiAlani
Yes props to Graeme / Reeky who had organized this last time. The other bit of that day besides Stalin was rather than "stone age" the 1st century BC stone-built and cave looking structures of Uplistsikhe, quite unlike anything i have ever seen. And if you were there in '07 in Gerogia you don't need the "stone" age when you have "YAYA" / cha cha ! I would llike to say I have fond memories of drinknig that stuff - truth is I have no memories of drinking it.......!

wanderer
Should hopefully have a price for the Gori day trip this week. If anyone is interested, it will be setting off early on the Thursday morning, and back in the evening time. If I could get a rough idea of interest, it would help with getting a firm price. Cheers

wanderer
Can you define 'early morning' please ...................... No earlier than 9am....maybe as late as 10am..... Agent says it depends on the numbers due to size of mini-van/bus/coach he will need to get.

deecie
Agreed, 10am = Early Morning. 9am = obscene.
wanderer
Agreed, 10am = Early Morning. 9am = obscene. Not obscene for those doing the tour who get into Tbilisi only 3/4 hours beforehand If numbers are not all that high, probably push for a slightly later start time
wanderer
Pushing agent for a after 10am departure. Will be back in Tbilisi for 5-6pm. Our price will depend on numbers, on if we get a 14 seater or a 28 seater. At the moment I have roughly 12 interested (myself and others away from the TAMB), so case of judging interest more just now. wanderer
Was out the office yesterday, so just for a update. At the moment I have 20 names (that does not include DINGI and WEBTA Scott, so please confirm), for a 28 seater bus. Once this bus is full I will start a reserve list which once at a healthy amount, will be on the 14 seater Mini Bus the agent will be supplying us with if the 28 seater is to sell out.
