binobear
Looks like this nonsense is being put to bed for good - well done FIFA ! http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/9767140/fifa-to-block-fa-from-olympic-team-gb-unless-other-home-associations-agree
northernscum
Something i didn't think i would ever type, but, Congratulations FIFA! Now FA, can you put your wee pet project in the bin once and for all please......?
ParisInAKilt
Dare I say it but leta just see how strong other FA's are, expect a bit of pressure from the english FA and British media. "Irish, welsh and Scottish FA's stop Team GB from almost certain victory, interview with Jim Murphy coming up"
tartantaff
This bit in the article baffles me. "The FA say they proposed a Team GB in Brazil to promote youth development and offer younger players a chance of competing at a major international tournament." This is the FA that regularly refuses to send a full strength U21 to tournaments for fear of upsetting the top clubs in England.
Jagtag
Let's hope that's the end of it and the FA can crawl back into their hole.
Maq
Good. Let's hope the non English FAs stick to their guns about this

Lion Rampant
I'm also inclined to take this as a soft warning that if the other FAs did allow this to happen, that FIFA may begin to reconsider us all competing separately. Might be wrong, but it's a feeling I have.

Toepoke
Heard this excellent news on the radio earlier. Played FIFA Course they would, they only allowed it for London 2012 as a one-off because it was a "home-games". Absolutely, Team GB have effectively 4 chances to qualify, very unfair to the other nations. Only way around it would be to let England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland compete in Olympic football as independent entrants but I couldn't see the IOC buying into that.... RWM 71 not out.
By way of an alternative suggestion we could always bring back the British Home International Championships with the winner getting to represent the UK/GB at the Olympics. I think there would be some perverse irony/pleasure if Scotland could edge out England in the qualifiers and go to South America in their place. As someone once sang back in 1978 -'England cannae dae it, cause they didnae qualify.....' And before a lynch mob starts heading my way this is what basically will happen for the Rugby Sevens Event next year at Rio with England being the Team GB reprentative as a result of them finishing above Scotland and Wales in last year's Rugby World Sevens series. ParisInAKilt
Rather we didn't bother. Carling cup in 2011 wasn't great and Olympics football isn't particularly exciting anyway. We should channel everything into making the euros and the world cup. While continuing the improvements at youth level

Why even offer a tenuous link like that? The best way is to offer them no "alternatives" at all, there should be no link whatsoever between the Scotland national team and GB as a combined international team. The FA have shown yet again that they can't be trusted in making the last, failed, attempt a "one off". This rebuke from FIFA is the best news we could possibly have been given in consigning this nonsense to the bin for good. In short..................EM! It would still give Team GB an unfair qualifying advantage, so no way would it be allowed...
PASTA Mick
If England qualify, an English team representing GB wouldn't be a terrible. England qualifying and then a mixed team representing GB would be wrong.
