I do however remember Barry Ferguson routinely referred to as 'genuinely world class'.

.

Really? Beyond a few particularly myopic, OF obsessed knuckle-draggers? Honestly can't remember that. Fletcher has never been anywhere near world class either.

I'd say Willie Miller was genuine world class.

He never played for a giant of football but at his peak there were very few players as capable as him. Rummenigge claimed that Miller was the best defender he ever faced, a while ago now right enough but he was probably our last very top drawer player.

I would say that Rooney is world class.

Has Rooney ever been included in the FIFA world team of the year?

Genuine question as I don't know the answer.

IMHO, I don't think he's ever been in the best 2 or 3 in his position so I'd be surprised if he had.

Id say that theres two possible definitions of world class that Id use depending on context, either a player who would get into a world 11 or a world cup squad of 23.

I dont think theres any player from the British Isles who would get into a world 11, nor a squad of 23, not even Bale.

I'd say world class would be being generally recognised as 1 of the top 2 or 3 players in that position on the planet over a reasonable period of time.

No current England players are at that level - a lot of very good players but no world class.

Bale has a case I'd say - probably gets in as would Giggs in his hey day.

Scottish players who have been world class - Law, Dalglish and Miller for me.

And probably Bremner, McGrain & Souness IMO.

Good debate but I've had it countless times with my friends. We came to the conclusion that there's World Class and below that International Class (for want of a better name). The IC players are guys like Rooney and Valdes and the WC ones are guys like Messi and Ronaldo.

Victor Valdes?

That's a bit like including the Brazil keeper from 1970.

No better than a decent keeper who played in an exceptional team.

The Gibraltar goalkeeper from Sunday would have won La Liga playing for that Barcelona side*

*probably not.

I'd say Rooney could've been considered World Class at some points during his career, but probably not now...

I'd say only for that one small period at the Euros when he was 17. Other than that I'd disagree.

Don't get me wrong, I think Rooney is a fantastic player but I don't think you can really make that argument. When he was highly rated, a big part of that was down to his age and that he had potential to go to the next level, arguably he's never really kicked on to the extent that people thought he would do. I think to an extent he's been overhyped due to breaking through at such an early age and also England wanting a new hero.

Fortunately there is a great comparison you can make with Ronaldo.

They are similar ages however when Ronaldo joined Man Utd, Rooney was the one who everyone was expecting to be the next big thing.

He'll no doubt go on to break Bobby Charlton's scoring record but he's not half the player that Charlton was.

Messi

Ronaldo

Suarez

Van Persie

Ibrahimovic

Muller

Lewandowski

Neymar

James

Reus

Gotze

Tevez

Higuain

All attackers or attacking midfielders, and all are better than Rooney, he is vastly over rated.

All great, all better than Rooney and still a couple I wouldn't class as world class.

I'd add to that list...

Pawlett

Hazard
