What's going to be remembered in twenty years time? Having ranking points or winning the Davis Cup?

I've heard it said in Golf many times and in tennis as well. No one remembers statistics and rankings. Trophies are all that count.

True, but a higher ranking and the resultant seeding / easier draw, could be the difference between winning a major trophy or not.

Anyway, surprised this is an issue - Murray can and should play both. Has any other top player ever skipped the World Tour Finals for the Davis Cup?

The problem is Murray's back issues. He still has problems related to the surgery a few years back and he finds it difficult to switch between surfaces without aggravating it. The transition between surfaces is something he manages carefully if you look at his schedule.

He was on the radio today talking about whether to try to do both, or just one of the comps, and said that his back is the issue, as he has to train certain ways to get it right. Did anyone see the strapping he had on it after the match yesterday? When he walked off court, he seemed to be in some pain.

Tremendous viewing and Andy deserves a long rest after that! Can't understand how any Scot could cheer on the opposition when two guys from Dunblane are playing. Personally, Murray is a sporting hero of mine and I want him to win every match he plays - whether that be on the ATP tour, in the majors, representing team GB in the Davis Cup or representing team GB at the Olympics - were fellow Scots really wanting Switzerland to win that final in London?

Would you support TEAM GB at Football even if most of the players came from Dunblane or any where else in Scotland., ?

I want Andy to win every game he plays, but not while representing Britain...

The more Britain wins, the more the British state celebrates the Great(er) Britain becomes.

I saw dozens of women walking around Morrisons yesterday with UJ T shirts on, they had a great day celebrating Britain winning the Tennis.

Like I said If Britain played Australia at Football who would you support? If half the team were Scottish?

What about another sport where Scots are playing under other flags?

I cant support Britain in anything they do, I support England sometimes, but never Britain

Thats just the way it goes on on my head...

Football is a special case because of the threat to the existence of national teams involved in a British side. I support the lions in rugby, Scots competing for the UK at the Olympics etc with no compromising if my scottishness.

A team GB football team doesn't and will never exist, so let's deal with reality.

I feel nothing for team GB - and even less for the British state - If there were no Scots involved, I wouldn't care if they win, lose or draw.

My view also applies to other sports where Scots have to compete under the GB banner - they will always get my support. One of my best sporting memories is sitting in front of the TV watching Rhona Martin's GB rink win Olympic Gold in 2002 - you would obviously have been willing Sweden during that match.

In the absence of Scottish teams in many sports, Scots (whether nationalist or unionist) have no choice but to compete under the only banner available. I think they deserve our support, you don't - fair enough, we'll have to disagree.

I hope Murray retains his Olympic title next year, but feel free to cheer on Djokovic or Federer or whoever else he meets along the way.

The ATP have confirmed that the Tour Finals are mandatory - he'll have to compete in both (if fit). His body will be well attuned for the O2, as there are only hard court tournaments left this season, but certainly a problem for the Davis Cup with little time to prepare.

I'll repeat, nobody is right and nobody is wrong in the whether to support Team GB in the Davis Cup or Olympics. The simple fact is GB is a country and the country of our passports. Like it or lump it.............personally I hate it but acknowledge that it exists and means I choose to support Scots in Davis Cup and Olympics even though they are competing under a GB banner. That's due to Politics.

Others choose to support the other team. Fine. Your choice. Not my choice but as long as you're comfortable with it.

Some Scottish Celtic fans choose to ignore the fact they are from Scotland and support Ireland for some sort of religious or distant family connection or for something to do with their club team being started by Irish or something. Whatever, freaks of nature to support another country before your own and I wonder if those supporting Australia at the weekend might want to consider the comparison there.

Another complication in my mixed up mind is that I don't think I'd support Team GB with any real conviction if it were all English players in the team. Similarly I don't know if I'd have gone to the Final if it was in Manchester or Birmingham as it would have been more English and British than the weekend just passed. Analyse that all day if you want, I just don't think I'd have bothered.

At the weekend I clapped and sang and stamped my feet to Scotland the Brave and Loch Lomond. I ignored GSTQ (as did almost everyone, including the masses of English). I chose to wear 100% Scotland gear as did many others. Some wore 100% Union Jacks and some wore half and half. All fine since we live in Scotland which is unfortunately part of GB. Like it or lump it.

The debate is a long standing one in many situations and will keep going until we are independent. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong. Make no mistake though, nobody is more Scottish or patriotic than me even though I stood beside English and Welsh and Northern Irish and cheered two Scots win a tennis match.

Some very bitter and extreme views on this thread.

No way will Murray skip the Davis cup final for the tour finals, unless he gets injured. Would be a very impressive feat for Andy and the team to win the Davis cup, irrespective of the attitudes adopted by other nations this year.

Edmund playing a stormer in the first singles match! Leading Goffin by 2 sets to 1.

If he can close this out then the Murray's could win the Davis cup in the singles tomorrow!

To be fair he was playing a player almost 100 places above him in the rankings. It would be like Burkina Faso racing to a 2-0 lead against Argentina and then losing 3-2.

It'd be like a Burkino Faso team full of youngsters, racing to a 2-0 lead against Argentina in the world cup final by playing their hearts out. Then running out of energy due to the amount of effort they'd expended in the opening period.

TangerineTartan clearly doesn't really understand elite level sport and the margins involved.

Is there per chance some input into the GB team from our southern neighbours ?

Obviously we have Andy Murray with 2 single match's , we then have the Murray brothers for the double's, so that's 3 out of 5 games, which if won is enough to win the cup but say there is a slip up and we require a win from one of the two other games, so i thought here is the English input in the first game with the boy Edmund, apparently from Yorkshire in the first match but with a closer look he is from Jo'berg in South Africa !!! :yikes3:

So come on England - " We have carried you for to long" !

And one last point the coach is a Glaswegian :cheers3:
