Rangers Youth Policy

Watching the Rangers v St Mirren game. Surely this is the kind of game that Rangers could throw in a cpl of younger untried players to get some experience. I apreciate that they want to win every game but this is a nothing cup at home. You could easily play a younger attacker and maybe a midfielder or defender without significantly weakening the team. What benefit do the club get from playing Kenny Miller today? I hoped and thought Warburton might be a change but seems he has fallen into the old firm trap of winning every game without thinking of anything even remotely long term.

Sorry but you're talking crap. The only players in the team over 25 were Miller and Wallace. It is a young team and they will always need experience along with them. You're making stuff up to whine about.

How many players starting today came through their youth policy. My post is more about taking the opportunity to bed in young players who cant be flung in during league games. Every player starting today would be considered a first team player. Look at what all the more forward thinking managers and clubs do in the lesser cups. They put in a couple of the best up and coming players. The Old Firm never do this and then when they get an injury or suspension crisis they need to chuck in a totally untried youngster.

Barrie McKay, Danny wilson both started with Ryan Hardie coming off the bench to replace Miller.

I don't think that is a bad effort.

It's fine saying its a nothing game in a pointless cup but the fans want rangers to win everything and would moan if they didn't.

In fairness, the youth set up at Rangers is very much a work in progress too at the minute. There have been huge changes there recently, not only with players, but how it's structured, training and of course the guys in charge.

I do take your point though, and it's something I would like to see myself. That said I can understand Mark Warburton's thinking. It's still very early days for us and I imagine he wants to keep us winning games. Let be serious, if Rangers don't win this competition, given our resources compared with every other club in the Competition, Warburton would be absolutely slaughtered for it. I think another point worth mentioning, is that most of the guys in our side are young themselves and regardless of them being regular first team players or not they have won nothing in the game.

We've lost one an drawn one after a winning run from the start of the season. We needed to win today to get rid of any doubts.

The team is virtually all under 25s which is a massive shift from the over 30s in the last few seasons. To moan about no youth players in the team is naive in the extreme.

I'm assuming McKay, Wilson and Hardie don't count for some bizarre reason?

Hardie doesnt count as he played about 11 minutes when the game was already won. He is exactly the kind of player that Rangers could have started instead of Miller today. One young player shouldnt weaken the team that much and if he does why is he at the club in the 1st place. Im not saying Rangers dont have a decent average age. Im saying games like today should be used to give a cpl of untried players some competitive game time as no doubt there will a time when they are needed but they wont have the experience.

That's the first time I've seem Rangers for a while and I thought quite a young team looked good going forward if a bit wasteful at times. St.Mirren looked really poor and have fallen dramatically since the last I saw of them. Shame.

Rangers weren't really tested at the back but looked vulnerable at the one decent cross Saints put in. Not much between Hibs and Rangers I would say right now.

I think this and Slasher's post are fair points. I'm just not sure we are in a position to disrespect any cup at this stage, especially given we still haven't won the feckin thing. He (Slasher) makes the pertinent one in saying us and Hibs are pretty even. I agree with that, and in the last game against Saints we were fortunate to come away with a win. What I mean is, we are winning games at this level but we aren't miles ahead of everyone else, far from it. Are we good enough to put out weakened sides right now?

Regardless of the competition, today wasn't the day to fanny about. We are faR from the finished article so, to me, it makes sense to continue to develop the younger players we already have in the first team squad and keep winning games. Walk before you run and all that.

Ps I would add, I'm very very please with what's going on at youth level right now. Craig Mulholland really has been excellent so far.

You'll also notice we don't cross the ball in at corners when attacking. We don't seem up to much in the air, which is a drawback against most Scottish teams.

Still not convinced by the defence although it was totally in control in the first half.

We are currently very wasteful in front of goal bit that follows a period where nearly every shot went in. So overall the average is probably about right.

A lot have, and many have been seen as not good enough for rangers, and are now at other lower league Scottish clubs. Even with the best facilities, you many shine a shite, and are very few good Scottish players emerging, and such little football is played theses days. Can't remember the last time I passed a park and seen kids just aving a kick about. If they dn start there, then they will never end up in any youth system. When I was at school, everyone wanted to be good at football as it got you status. different social standards these days and the drive doesnt seem to be there.
